Good day GunNutz,

I am new to the whole sire but glad to be here, and I come to you in search of advice. Locally to me there is for sale a Mauser 98K Portuguese Contract 8MM G/VG. Condition is as you would expect, not a museum piece but still a piece of history and something I am very interested in.

For me the asking price is steep at $5k CAD, but there is room for negotiation, I am hoping to hear from those more knowledgeable than me what are some items I should keep in consideration when I make my offer, I am thinking a $3K offer.

Any and all advice appreciated from the humble new member.

The one in this thread should be worth $5K but that is still big money.

$3K is more than reasonable for that Porto. If some dummy wants to give him $5K; you know what they say about fools and their money.

Looks like a nice rifle, but one should keep in mind that 1941 Port Contracts are without a doubt the most common ‘original’ K98k’s one can find in Canada. $5k would get you a pretty nice actual German issued K98k, and probably a neat or more desirable code to boot, when/if you can find one.

I think $3k-$3.5k is more fair for these. Thats sort of the starting end of authentic German issued K98k’s these days anyways.

The Portuguese contract K98s have an amazing amount of history surrounding them.

When they first came into Canada, back in the early-mid seventies, along with the Brazilian 1908s and 1935s, they were in pristine, out of the crate condition. Some of them came with matching bayos and other accessories, including factory accuracy targets, depending on whether unscrupulous vendors separated them to make more profit, selling them individually.

About a decade later, the lesser condition rifles came onto the markets, without any accessories.

Many of the rifles made up for the Portuguese contracts were diverted for use by German government and issued to various Axis forces.

Some like to say, specifically to the SS, which I don't believe.

The Portuguese sent a lot of these rifles to their African colonies, where they were mostly used up, although well maintained, until they were in pretty sad condition. Of course, they issued and stored a lot of them in Portugal.

I don't know, but I don't think all of them had Waffenampt stamps before a certain date. There are others on this site that can give you a lot more in depth information on this and everything else in general.

In BC, the rifle in your pics would be a really hard sell at $5k in that condition, especially without accessories, other than the sling.

IMHO, $3k would be the most it would be worth, unless you really (desperately) want to own it.

you need to get better pics. the front sight guard appears to be A replacement. I would think 3K is a stretch for the rifle pictured.

Shop around, there are better examples out there.
That one is starting to look like it was rode hard and put away wet.
Never buy the first one you see as something better will turn up.

Yup, Coyote is right. It's definitely been through an issue and it's been back to someone's depot for a bit of a refurb.

There is honest wear to the surfaces, a few dings and as mentioned, the sight protector is correct though.

Just google K98 Portuguese Mauser and they have that same protector new in grease. Some have the early flat butt plates and some have cupped butt plates.

Legacy lists one in much nicer condition, with all the accessories at $2600

I just had a look at the rifle on the vendors website and the front sight hood is definitely a replacement. (IDF) don't think the Nazi's were using Isrealie parts.

I bought one a few years ago from an old geezer. He assured me that it was "mint", according to a gunsmith he took the rifle to. It wasn't mint, but in probably VG condition. I think the one pictured is way overpriced and would pass on it. However, these rifles are not all that common, and last I heard, they aren't making any more of them.

My pile of Mausers keeps increasing in value to the point where I may have to consider letting a couple go. I have often bought the first one I found of a certain type, sometimes being able to upgrade later, but lots of times not being able to find a better one. I am more of a gatherer than a collector, but over the years, I have stumbled on some dillies. Unless a person is seeking a certain type, model, serial range, etc., there are some really nice refurbs to be had for somewhat reasonable prices. I have never felt left out because some of my prized rifles are not totally original or pristine. Having said that, some of the collectors would probably faint if they saw my ugly old M48 Yugo that is my "go to" beater shooter.

I didn't look that closely at the front sight hood but those rifles were issued with a very similar looking sight hood.

Kjohn, even ugly beater Yugo M48s are beautiful
