looking for opinions on ruger gp100 vs sw 686

I have heard the S&W is more refined, whereas the GP100 is tougher.
I think S&W tries to deny this, with this ad:

I've heard a lot of people say the Smith has the much nicer trigger. Is there any cost-effective way to refine the GP to S&W specs?

Ok all you guys interested in the 4.25

There is going to be only 50 made for canada

If you guys are seriously ready to buy then start adding your names and I can talk to the dealer about a group buy

There is the IOWEGAN BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE for Ruger Double Action Revolvers. Read about it here:
http://rugerforum.net/ruger-pistols/26129-iowegan-manuals.html

There was a thread all about the IBOK but it has been deleted. I have the old edition of the IBOK for GP100 graciously provided by IOWEGAN, the Ruger Guru in Rugerforum.net, a fine gentleman who just happens to be a retired gunsmith...and the source of most firearms wisdom on that forum.

It would be very nice of S&W or Ruger to make 4.2 or 4.25 barrels especially with Canadians in mind but actually there are States that have similar restrictions as Canada,California being one of them. We are just fortunate to benefit from that barrel size.

You are misinformed. California has no such restrictions.

I have both....Roger GP-100 with a 4" barrel and my S&W 686 has a 6" barrel....Both have been punished with .357mag loads, and both have worked flawlessly....Get whatever you find is cheaper....

I'd be happy with either but my preference would be to the S&W 686.

NAA.

I've owned a GP100, a 686, a PC 686 and a COLT Python.
The GP100 is a great gun and a terrific value for the money.
I tested the triggers and accuracy on all of them and here is what I found:
#1 Performance Centre
#2 COLT Python
#3 S&W 686
#4 GP100
Any one is a great gun, but if you want a really great revolver, buy a S&W Performance Centre revolver or a COLT Python. They are hand tuned at the factory and it shows.
