I'm thinking about buying a 7mm08 for my girls to shoot,Of course they will be recoil reduced. Then again i'll be shooting the rifle myself, or just a excuse.
What I would like to know is, what are the opinions of the 7mm08 and preferred rifle of choice?

I think I'll need something in the 71/2 to 9 # range in stainless action/barrel. Ive looked around and researched and I like the Remmy in the model seven. Then again the Kimber makes a 7mm08 aswell.

Thanks in advance guyz, This is one of my few posts, but I always look to this site of info. Thanks again M65 In 300 WM.

It's a great little cartridge, have a look at the .260 as well, also very well balanced and slightly less recoil again. The 7mm's the versatility champ though and you can download them with 140gr bullets as the twist rates are designed to stabilize up to 180gr. I'd say you're on the right track. Personally, I'd look at the Model 700 rather than the 7, the 7's a nice little thing and I love to carry them but they are quite light, ie. recoil more. A model 700 SPS stainless will set you back around $600, less than the model 7 I believe, and have a tad more meat on its bones, though this is just a sentiment I haven't reviewed actual weights. Also, if you'd like to go really cheap but still an alright rifle, the Stevens 200 is in your weight range, and comes in 7mm-08 for $320 from wholesale sports. :)

Happy hunting :)

Lately I have been getting that "urge" to get a new gun. I have a .243 that my kids hunt with but I have been wanting to get them something a little more powerful. Then I got reading up on the Kimber M84 and I figured a light weight in 7mm08 may be just the ticket. The 7mm08 is a very similar round to the 7X57. And I have one of those. It is an Interarms Mark X in a Manlichner stock. Then I thought, what if I get a light synthetic stock for the Mark X? A butler Creek weighs 2 lb. But now I'm off topic.

I hear really good things about the 7mm08.

7mm-08

I have a Remington 700 BDL with a 7-08 stainless Remington Mountain rifle barrel, and it's a great gun to shoot and carry. Light weight, and compact with a 22" barrel.
I probably have over a dozen 7X57's on my racks mostly military. I haven't been a fan of magnums but I can handle the recoil of the 7mm's.
The 7-08 is a good choice for any young shooter.

I just bought a Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 for my son to carry. I have met a few people afield that carry that calibre for moose even. All I've read to date about the round has been very good.

I have shot 2 deer now with my 7-08. They can do the job. 7-08 is fun cartridge to shoot targets as well. just about any 140 grain recipe produces good results.

Before I purchased my 7-08, I used my 30-06, my dad's .308, 300 mag and 7mm Mag.7-08 has same efect on deer. The difference is pretty miniscule.

Now to try the 7-08 out on the mooses...

I loaded up 160 grain sierra BT gamekings this year. I shot my deer with that combo. It had good results. First shot dropped him on the spot with a round through the lungs. + or - 20 yards from 200.The folow up shot was through th neck. 160gr may be more than I needed, but I am satisfied this combination will drop a swamp donkey If I put it in the boiler room.

The 140gr sierra's worked well last year too.

I won my 7mm08, Browning Abolt at our local trophy night about 20 years ago. Since then I"ve had a Remington 700Classic in 3006, Browning Abolt in 7rem mag, Pre 64 Winchester in 270, Reminton 760 in 270, Sako 243, Winchester mod 100 in 243, and tried a few more at the range.

Now I only use the 7 08. Great deer rifle with 140 gr Ballistic tips( chronyed at 2975fps at 15 feet). I also worked a load using 160 gr Speer Grand Slams (2600fps) that dropped my moose in his trcks a couple years ago.

Try it , you'll like it. Low recoil, light weight, short action and overall length:dancingbanana:

Just picked up a Remington 700 BDL SS DM last week, it impressed me at the range and hopefully it will do the same in the field in a couple of weeks!

Happy Hunting!

I cannot say enough good things about that cartridge. I bought a 700 mountain Stainless/Laminate a couple of years ago, and it is, hands down, the most versatile, pleasant to carry and pleasant to shoot rifle I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It will put the first two shots into the same hole at 100m (three if I let the barrel cool for the third), and I shoot 140 TSX's exclusively. I am 100% confident on eevrything from deer to Black Bear to Elk to Moose with this ONE load. Drops deer quick without extensive damage, tough enough for moose with great penetration.

If I could only keep one rifle, that 700 MTN would be the one.

I have owned rifles from 22 hornet to 45/70. The 7-08 stays in the rack while others come and go. I have hunted deer, goats, bear and moose with mine it does the job each and everytime. I used a 280 for many years but found no real difference between the two rounds except the shorter action is nicer to carry. I also think that a 700 would help to keep recoil to a minimum over the model 7 but take the girls to the store and have them try them both. Get the one that they like. Good luck

There is a post on CGN re: "is the 7-08 enough for moose" (or something like that...). In the post there is a pic of a member and an absolutely massive Elk taken with his 7-08. That pic (and thread) and Wrong Way's past posts on the 7-08's ability almost convinced me to go with the 7-08. I went with the .270, but there's still a part of me that thinks the 7-08 may have been the better choice. Then again I change my mind just about every other day on these things.... wanted the 6.5 swede before the 7-08/.270 debate.

Good luck to you...

7mm08

As my dad got older and more fragile, I bought him a Browning MICRO in 7mm08. I had a brake installed, and it removed virtually all recoil. He used it on several WT's and also heavy Mulies...Most dropped on the shot. I watched one mulie dump like it had been hit with lightning. Using 140 Noslers...he also took 3 moose, with 160 gr partitions. All fell within 25 yards of the shot..one he took at a lasered 225 m. I shoot it now, and the Micro makes a great stalking rifle, is real accurate, light to carry, and very lethal.
Love it...

This fall I saw a young fellow drop a big Cow Elk at just over 500 yards with one shot from the 7-08. I would have probably not taken the shot, but he was sure he could do it, and sure enough, he could. Slightly quartering away, 140 Accubond went right through both lungs and ended up under the hide on the far side. Elk went about 15 ft and tipped over. Pretty impressive! Of course, I have been shooting the 7x57 for 35 years, and regard it very highly for an overall great performer. Regards, Eagleye.

It's a great little cartridge, have a look at the .260 as well, also very well balanced and slightly less recoil again.

+1 on the 260 Rem as well. Excellent little cartridge that is vastly under appreciated. Would probably have a great cult following if it had been named the 6.5-08 instead of the "260". Both it and the 7mm08 are considerably more capable than the 243, which would be your other option in that direction, and would be a better choice for all around hunting.

7mm08 by itself is more commonly available and in wider choices of loadings than the 260, but fewer than the 243 or the 308. It really shines when hand loaded. Factory loads only go up to 140-150grain bullets, and many of these are adequate on larger game, but 160-162gr bullets can be loaded at good velocities, with which more confidence can be had shooting larger species - especially important with new hunters.

I know a young woman that hunts with a 7mm08, the Remington Model Seven CDL was a perfect fit for her at about 5' and ~110#. Another good choice would be the Browning Micro-Hunter.

You can also load 120 gr vmaxs up in the 7mm08 as well. Would I try them on big game? no? would I try them on gophers up to coyotes/wolves? wicked performance on gophers. Have not had the chance to dump a coyote/wolf yet with them.

I want another one. I would probably pick up a model 7.
