Looking for project info 6.5mm?

The 6.5-06 isn't a terrible choice, nor the 264 win mag. I will say in confidence that the 6.5-284 will be more enjoyable for you. Lapua makes brass for it for one, so no need to get into case forming. Also, it's abundant at the moment and it's a shorter case, so in theory should be more inherently accurate and efficient. You'll also be able to pick up a set of redding comp dies for the 6.5-284 for about $180. Pm if you want to know where to get em.

Ummm case forming would include running a 25-06 case through a die. That's it. Or if you didn't want to do that just go ahead and seat a 6.5 bullet in a 25-06 case.......it'll fit in there just fine.
Inherently accurate cause it's a shorter case. Not necessarily..... Way more factors to consider than that. Way more
Redding bushing dies and a competition type seater for the 6.5-06. Yep those exist too.
Plus if using a long action there is plenty of room for the longer 25-06 length case in the mag

Being that he has a .473 bolt face I would say the 264 win would be a bad choice....

Thank you guys for all the suggestions, some very good info and a few things I hadn't even thought of, 6.5-06.... looks interesting. I still need to look at it a bit more but really appreciate the advice from all of you.
Cheers and happy shooting

6.5x55 swede pushed to modern pressures. Lapua makes excellent brass that is easy to get and its one of those cartridges that falls into the "medium" length class that excels in a long action.

Good point on the 264 win mag,

Last time I checked a new set of redding comp dies was north of $400. Used sets of 6.5-284 are abundant now that 7mm is taking over long range competition and 6.5-284 is no longer flavour of the month. I'm no expert in necking up cases, but I could imagine necking up a calibre by seating a bullet might induce a bit of runout. Maybe not, as I haven't done it. Either way, I'm not trying to get into a pissing match about what is better. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it.

You could be right about run out if the case wasn't expanded first. I've never checked virgin cases after loading as I usually fire them first before load work up or just run a bunch through an old barrel before getting a new one put one.

I saved a bit of money by using a 260 rem micrometer seating die I had on hand and didn't screw it down all the way in the press rather than something specific to the 6.5-06 but they are available as well

Yes its available, lots of 100 are still around likely and 1000's are for sure
The push from competitive US shooters (US Palma team ) finally got Norma to send it over - less issues necking up 6.5/284 Lapua brass - doughnut when the thicker brass in the shoulder is moved to the neck
I got some a few weeks ago
Send me an email to insitearms@gmail.com and I can give you some more info

Need a cartridge with enough capacity to cleanly burn H1000 or Retumbo. The 264 Win Mag would work. A 6.5 SAUM/WSM would work too. Dies for wildcat cartridges are available from Whidden Gunworks at reasonable cost. Using 300/270 WSM in SAUM die will extend neck length.

How much pressure does h1000 need to burn clean? 4350 burns a lot cleaner than the slow node in my 6.5-284. It easily twice as fouled after 20rds than h4350. But my velocities and case capacity were good.
