...using IMR 4198, which we have a surplus of at Dad's house.

We're looking to make reduced loads using the following calibres and bullets:
  • .243 Win - 70 grain SP bullet
  • .270 Win - 90 gr SP bullet
  • 30.06 - 110gr lead

I've been all over the Interwebs to find info, but come up empty. Anyone tried this powder for reduced loads?

Cheers,

Dan

Speer shows reduced loads using IMR 4198 and it works well for that purpose, however they only show reduced loads with 1 powder and usually 4759 works better. Lyman shows 22.7 grs. with an 83 gr. cast bullet in the .243 for 2175fps and low enough pres. that you could sub a condom bullet. For the .270 they don't show 4198 but I'm sure you could use the starting load of RL-7(25.4)grs. and 2065fps for a 130gr. For the 30-06 they use 23-37grs of 4198 for a 151gr. cast. If you must use jkt. bullets i would stay away from the max. load as it gens.38000 cup press. I must say that i have not used these loads or that powder and do not endorse their use.

How reduced do you want to go ??

I recently bought a 300WSM. Kicks like a mule off the bench . Hodgdon web site has a section for reduced loads. You can reduce the maximum load by 40% but only with one powder . H4895.

I tried it & it works great & a 60% charge is still under an inch at 100 yards and my shoulder is not sore anymore.

.243 Win - 70 grain SP bullet 25 -32 gr 4198 2700 fps
.270 Win - 90 gr SP bullet 32 - 38 gr 4198 3000 fps
30.06 - 110gr lead 30 - 35 gr 4198 (better to use heavier bullet)

I have a reduced load for

30-06 - 115 gr SP GC lead
WITH IMR 4198 --- MIN 24.0 = 1797 fps // max 26.0 1940 fps
CCI PRIMERS WW case ( from RCBS CAST BULLET MANUEL)

NEVER TRIED IT

Im using sr 4759 in 30-30 and 308

Many thanks, gents. We're working up loads for 10 - 12 year olds here. Besides that, neither Dad nor I much dig recoil. The low-velocity loads are much nicer to shoot, and get the bullet there all the same.

Ganderite - where'd you get the recipes?

From my work with IMR. Tested every powder with almsot every bullet weight. I have a lot of useless info on file. Want to know the granual dimesnions of every powder? The chemical compositions?

You sound like a man who'd know - thanks much for your insight.

You can get it just about anywhere, at least when the guys shooting it in their Savage muzzleloaders leave some on the shelves.

Everywhere except Edson, Alberta, apparently. Or anywhere I've checked in Edmonton. But you've given me hope that it's at least "in country". Thanks for the tip.

There's some Bluedot recipes in the reloading section. Which is probably where this thread should be?

Yeah, thanks mate, but Bluedot ain't what we have. And yes, this should be in the reloading section rather than here. I posted in haste before the weekend. Perhaps a helpful mod could undue the damage?

Thanks to all. Saw Dad this weekend for the Ritual Turkey Mayhem. He's planning on working some loads up with the info presented here.
