I was going to buy a gun from some guy in Alberta but then the SHTF for him here and he's not sent me the promised quote probably becuase I am a sponsor here... If he responds great but now I question his ability to deliver since he said 2 days for the quote a week ago...

So I'm looking for a mid range (out to about 500 yds) bolt gun and a want it to be something I use on bear if I need to and I'd like to be able to wander around the bush with it so 26" barrels are out of the question...

I'd pretty much decided on a 308 700 and I'd like a heavy barrel but from there it becomes a blur I'd been talking LTR with the above un-named individual.. and maybe swapping the stock (I prefer a wood stock)...

So I'm looking for a decent smith who could both supply the gun (rings & scope) and test it and do any work required to make it a decent shooter... (Bed it and tune the trigger).. Anybody care to make a recommendation?

Rifle

Can't make a recommendation!!!!
But I can tell you that I have the REM700P and the Savage 10 FP(20" Barrel) They both shoot equally as well. The Savage is lighter hence the shorter barrel. It has the accu-trigger, the synthetic stock on the Savage isn't as nice as the Remington, but is functional, this would be an ok carry hunting rifle...you wouldn't be dissappionted, after you shot it and got 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds.I got mine from Wholesalesports in Calgary.Savage was just over $600.00.

Check out this ad.It could be just the ticket. The barrel is 24", but it would still be more managable then a 26.Top it off with a decent scope, and you're laughing.
Scott

Thanx
I PM'd him on the 16th to which he replied that it was spoken for... I'm guessing that maybe it wasn't .. So I've PM'd him again...

Why don't you just spell it out? Rick Timmins is the fellow I'm sure you're refering to, as he went by the 'handle' ATR (AlbertaTacticalRifle) on the board here, and is now a banned member of the board. He is extremely busy, and as a one man band, you will have to accept delays. Big deal, shiitz happens, moving on....

If you are going with a wood stock, why not just buy a model that comes from the factory with one? If you're going to bang about with it in the bush, why 'tune' it?
If it was me, I'd buy the model I wanted, put the scope, rings, and base I wanted on it, and see how it shoots out to 500m in stock form, then go from there. Who knows, it might shoot great right out of the box.

1) I didn't want to drag his name thru the mud yet again
2) At some point ATR was censored woulda come out *** anyways apparently that has changed...
3) I understand being busy.. I can understand a day or 3 delay but he didn't indicate that it would be a difficult thing to deliver and I did give him a time frame. And you know what if he comes back to me with something tomorrow or Thursday I'll look at if if I haven't worked out something with somebody else.. I haven't heard anything from him and it doesn't matter at this point.
-----------------------

I prefer a wood stock... I didn't plan on bangin' about in the bush that much but practicallity says it will happen.. I have 100 acres mostly bush.. We've had bear problems and if I shoot one and have to follow it into the brush 26" wouldn't be my first choice if I have a choice... Primary usage was for mid range target shooting(100-300 yards 500 if I can find a range that long) the thing is no good for me if it doesn't group at 300 yds... If Remington made a factory HB in 22 inches I'd buy it.. But the only wood stock 308 they make is the VLS and it's 26 inches... I don't know about the old ones...

Tuning isn't necessarily lightening it's getting it to do what you want... I prefer a staged trigger with a very small gap between the take up and the break. From what I've read most 700 triggers are about 8 lbs from the factory and they can range in how they take up and break... Why gamble have it at the smith from the get go and make sure it does what I want...
