anyone out there have suggestions on some reload data for my tikka 300 wsm? I'm using varget powder that I have extra and want to shoot hornady 168 grain A-Max bullets. I did some research and came up with 50.5 grains of varget powder. Would like to know if its feasible or not.

Hodgdons powders states 54gr start max is 57.5 with 165gr bullet, for 168gr bullets they don't suggest varget at all
My Lyman book says the accuracy load with 165gr bullets is 66.5 #4350
A powder that worked well in my & 7mmwsm with the best velocity and the least pressure was Magpro for accccuracy H 4831sc

It is feasible. The Barnes #4 lists a starting load of 52.5 grs of Varget with 165-168 gr TSX's in the .300 WSM. I believe this would be a good starting point for your 168 gr A-Max. The maximum load is 58 grs for the TSX and this load breaks 3000 fps. Ordinarily when a fast powder is chosen, high pressure signs are observed before the optimal velocity is reached, but in this case 3000 fps is more than useful, if the accuracy is there.

Ran your 168 gr bullet on Quickload for the 300 WSM through a 20" barrel, COL = 2.860.

Disclaimer = Information only, don't do this.

It says 56.0 gr Varget would fill the case to 88.6%. PMax would be 50,241 psi giving MV of 2689 f/s. Burn rate = 99.1%.

Sorry I can't display the Quickload chart for you like others do. I'm too stupid. If you're familiar with the Quickload display it shows the pressure curve topping out just into the yellow zone with a 56 gr load so I'd definately take this as a max. Running the program for a 58 gr load as posted above, I get an MV of 2773 f/s and PMax at 55,189 psi with the pressure curve just touching the red zone.

Without going into detail again, your 50 gr looks a tad light. 52 gr looks better to start. MV should be about 2517 f/s with 52 gr. Burn rate = 97.4%.

Please get some confirmation from a manual and don't use this post as your guide to run up loads. If this info coincides with your manual then it'll serve as a confirmation.

Any of the 4350's, IMR4831 or my fave RL-19 are all good. Even good old W760 will give top speed from the 168 A-Max (68.5 with a 165 SST gave us right around 3140 in an A-Bolt 24"). As noted, Varget's maybe a bit too fast burning.
