Hey, my buddy and I are looking for a place to shoot Ruffed Grouse that is within 30 minutes drive of the south side of Edmonton. Anyone have advice on this?

I've never gone before, he has and was going to take me to his usual spot but he's quite busy and doesn't have the time to make the long drive now.

Go out towards Drayton Valley-Brazau Dam and walk down some lease roads. Tons of crown land out that way! Maybe 1/2 hr 45 min drive?

Find out what county you want to hunt in and then go to the county office and buy a "Landowner's Map". These are great resources that show you all the roads, residences, crown land, private land, leased land, etc etc. Cost is around twenty bucks.

Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area is a few miles east of Ft. Saskatchewan. They allow hunting, no motorized vehicles. Lots of grouse, not many grouse hunters. You do need to register at the wardens office, but only once for the entire season. You'll have to google the ph number to call the warden to set up a time to meet him at his office, after that you can hunt grouse there any time you want for the rest of the season. It's probably the best grouse hunting available that close to edmonton, and not many hunters seem to take advantage of it because of the walk-in only rules. (actually mountain bikes are ok too)

I dunno why people hate walking so much. Mountain bikes, never thought of that though, seems like a decent way to get to the more remote areas.

Do they allow big game hunting?

Are there any other places like this around the province where one might hunt? Any for big game?

Yes, the Blackfoot has big game hunting. I've only shot grouse there, big game is all draw i think. Call the warden for details... last year he told me that not too many people want to walk so it's relatively quick and easy to be drawn.

Saw several very very good bull elk there last year while chasing grouse. two 6x6 and 1 heavy 5x5. Saw some moose as well but no bulls. WT and mule deer as well.
