Hi

I am looking at getting a scope for my new Savage 93R BTVSS. I will be doing mostly target but the odd crow shooting.

I would like to stay within the $200 range. I can get a Nikon prostaff 4-12X40mm for 199.99 plus tax or the Bushnell Legend 4-12X40mm for $157.99 plus tax.
A buddy of mine told me that the Nikon is not good for target cause of the cross hairs. Any thoughts would be great.

I've got the Bushnell legend on my savage its a 5x15 and its great. From what I know Nikon makes a nice optic but I've never owned one. I would suggest googling and reading as much as you can.

What zoom you get is entirely up to you but I would go for the thinnest crosshair you can find. I have an 8-32x50 with an extra fine crosshair on my Savage TR and I can see the bullet holes at 125 yards...very handy when they are so tiny. I'd have to be shooting at match sticks at that range for my target to be obscured.

Now I understand in your price range the quality of glass won't lend itself to the crispest image if you get a high magnification scope, but again it's all up to personal preference. I go for as much zoom as I can when I'm doing target work because I can always turn it down if I don't want it...but know I'd be pissed if I wanted it and didn't have it available. I don't hunt (yet) but it would be very handy for targets like crows and small varmints.

I use a BSA Sweet 17. Its more of an economy unit but its been working very well and is calibrated for the .17 hmr with bdc etc. And you can choose between 20 or 17 gr

They have the tasco scope 6-24x40mm for $129.99 but I don't want to go too cheap either. you think its worth it for the time being?

Revor what kind of scope you have?

That Tasco image gets pretty milky at 16x. I have a bushnell 4-16 on mine, fine cross hair, side focus. At least it's sharp at full power, but its a $400 scope. A mueller apv 4-14 is a pretty good scope for around $200.00

Well been looking at a few scopes and this scope seems to be a good possibility. Mueller 8-32×44 Target Scope. It comes with a sun shade as well for $250. a bit more than I wanted to spend but then again rather do that than regret a smaller power scope like Revor said.

anyone know anything about the simmons .44 mag 6-21X44mm scope? I looked through the scope and it was very clear in the store. It comes with a sun shade for $249.

I am in the same boat, looking for a reasonably priced scope from my .17HMR. Looking at a Simmons Pro Target 3-12X40, calibrated for the .17 and $180. Still trying to find the best option for my wallet.

Don't do it. WAY too much for an HMR. I know...I tried it on a CZ. Anything over about 12x (if the scope and your eyes are 1/2-decent) and you should be able to see the bullet holes @ 100 yards. 14x is better. The Bushnell Legend 5-15x is a great scope for the money if you can find one, or, consider the Mueller APT. I have one on my 22 mag, great scope for the money.

I had a Bushnell Elite 2.5 - 10 on my Savage HMR. It was OK, but I felt that the gun and my old eyes could reach out a bit further if I could see objects clearer and if the scope had a finer reticle.

I bought a Savage 64 TR, so the 2.5 - 10 Bushy went on it, as it is more of a 'plinking' gun.

I had a 8 - 32 X 56 Accu-Shot with an illuminated mil-dot reticle sitting around, so I mounted it on the HMR. I think I picked it up for around $200.00.

Had both set ups out last weekend to sight them in. I found that at 100 yds with 15-16X the HMR worked great. I could then zoom in and clearly see my groups.

Most will say it's a bit too much of a scope for a .17, but I think it's a great little set up.

Well I was considering the Mueller but could not get it locally and I rather buy local. So the end results were between
The Simmons .44 mag 6-21x44mm or the Simmons preditor quest 4.5-18x44mm and after looking at both I decides on the quest cause my field of view came in quicker. The only thing I don't like is the logo on scope for the preditor quest. $269.99 for scope.
