Looking for some 870 forend options...

Looking for a picatinny rail forend for an 870. I'm looking to mount a Magpul RVG grip on it so I'd like to get the forend as short and close to the magazine tube as possible. I'll be running a 12.5" barrel so it's for the standard length action bars.

What are your thoughts?

The fore end (pump) on an 870 surrounds the magazine tube so how could that not be as close as possible?

A 12.5" barrel is the minimum to still have the lug that fits over the end of the magazine tube in the regular spot, so it and a 30" barrel are exactly the same from that point back, where they pass above the fore end, and all the difference is whether there's any barrel forward of the lug. Any fore end that would work with any other standard barrel should be okay, and the difference is it's going to be louder and the shot pattern will be the widest imaginable and you want to be a bit more paranoid about your fore hand not losing grip and getting in the way of any of that.

The shape of the forend will determine how close to the bottom is to the magazine tube. The reason I want to get the rail portion as close to the mag tube as possible is for control purposes. The closer your hand is to the mag tube, the greater control you will have when using a vertical grip.

Thanks. I'm well aware the standard mag tube will fit barrels from 12.5" on up. I have a number of SBS's already and know the potential hazards involved. That's why I want to install a vertical grip in the first place.

If such a thing exists, I just want the shortest and most slender Picatinny forend available for standard length mag tube/action bars. It will keep the cost of the project to a minimum without having to buy another shotgun.

If I can't get what I want without too much trouble, I'll just pick up a 8.5" Grizzly, mount a Magpul RVG and a Hogue Tamer Grip and call it a day.

The smallest one I’ve found is the synthetic 870 police forend, I just bolted the piece of pic rail that came with the magpul vfg to it. I stopped using the vertical grip though, it just gets in the way I found.

Dlask makes a forend for their 10” shortys that uses a spacer to fit it in reg action bars but they are out of stock of the forend + spacer at the moment.

Thanks, Butcherbill...

If I wasn't going for a "pistol" configuration, I wouldn't even bother with the vertical grip.

I'm going for this look but with the stock Remington parts and 12.5" barrel and hopefully a forend to my liking.

Gotcha, well if that’s the case and it we’re me I’d still be using the 870p forend and attaching a length of pic rail to it. You have to drill two holes through the top of the forend to insert the bolts but that’s hidden under the barrel, it’s mounted solid. I can send you pics if you want of it, It’s on my tac14 clone currently.

Ergo makes a railed forend for the 870, but it's quite chunky, it is all aluminum though, so you won't be worrying that your going to rip the rail section off. If you know someone with a mill, they could mill off the rails you don't need.

They also make an Mlock version

I have the tri-rail version on a 12 1/2 inch Grizzly (I put a Remington Action Slide on the shotgun) and as you might expect, it's rock solid.

Thanks! I saw that forend on their website. I just did a Google search and noticed that they at one point offered a shorter length forend but I don't see it on their website. No doubt it's discontinued. In any event, I just messaged them to check.

The standard forends will work on a 12 1/2, a shorter forend will need a spacer - only the MCS, 8 1/2 conversions, and Mossberg shorties have a shorter forend than stock.

I like my Serbu folding forend, yeah its long when unfolded, but you could cut down the handle a bit if that's a big issue.

The other thing is that its actually designed to take 12 gauge recoil, unlike a detachable vertical grip that's intended to mount on an AR rail.

Was in csc this week and they have a midwest industries foregrip for about 125$ that looked slick. They had the cadex too...

I still go with the magpul sga stuff for ergos and versatility...

CSC? Calgary Shooting Centre?

I just happened to see a forend on Dlask's website that might be what I'm looking for.

Length stipulation aside, the best looking and functioning forend on a 12.5 inch barrel that you can also put a rail on is the Magpul Moe.

I would generally agree that the MOE forend works well. I have a number of them on other 870's & a 590 that I own. However, I don't much care for the looks or the placement of the vertical grip (based on its distance from the mag tube) of the configuration. With a higher center of gravity (relative to the grip placement), I want to minimize the amount of potential roll-over in the hands from it being too top-heavy. That's my biggest concern.

I've got all the individual components (short of the grip) to build the MOE configuration to give it a try before spending a lot of money. I know I'll want the grip regardless, so I'm just going to buy it and see how it goes.

So far, Dlask is the only option I have to get what I'm looking for. Ergo hasn't bothered to reply to my email so I'm guessing it's a no-go.

I would personally abandon the vertical grip on the MOE and go with a handstop instead.

I've considered this as well. With the MOE, a handstop would be a desirable thing. I've never had a configuration like this before so I wanted to experiment with it some. Part of the fun, isn't it? lol

What is your reasoning for abandoning the grip idea, if you don't mind me asking?

Just a personal preference. I find them a little uncomfortable and cumbersome, much like a side saddle. The only vertical grip I liked on a shotgun again was the short Magpul MOE vertical grip on the MOE forend
