Hey all,

I'm looking to get some advice from everyone.

I'm in the market to pick up a new rifle and I'm interested in the Sako TRG series of rifles.

I currently have a Remington 700 XCR TLR in .308win. I have had a considerable amount of work done on this gun ( only think left to do is a VBULL bottom metal system).
That being said I don't know if I want another .308 in the safe or not at this moment.
I was looking at the TRG-22 in .308, the TRG-42 in .300win or .338 LM.
The first thing I want to know is what should I expect as fas as barrel life is concerned with the 300 and 338. I have heard that a common lifespan for a .338 LM is around 2000 rounds. Considering that I LOVE to shoot and I put around 1000-1500 rounds through all my guns in a year this is a little concerning as I'm sure a replacement barrel for a TRG would not be cheap to buy and have installed. I have not heard a lot of people talk about lifespan of the 300win mag tho. Should I expect similar lifespan from this combination?

What kind of cost am I looking at for each cartridge? I do my own loading but I would most likely brake in the gun with some factory loads.

I would love to hear from some TRG owners on here about there experiences with these rifles as well.

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
Tim

I was going to get a TRG-22, but then went with another rifle I was considering in tandem.

These rifles have a good concept and are very accurate, but I'll often see posts here about people complaining about some of the parts. You might want to do a search for "TRG" in the Precision Forum to see what I'm talking about. Aside from that, there are plenty of owners who can give you first hand comments.

If I was going to spend the money to shoot a 300 WM or 338 LM precision rifle I would build rather than buy. If you've already got a 308 then you should consider going bigger to deliver the payload farther away. You can make some damned long shots with the 300 (Blackcloud can tell you all about it with his ATRS 300WM), and the 338 is even better.

I have spent far more building rifles in the past to be on par with what the TRG's are capable of out of the box.
I'm looking to get some more distance from my rifle's. I can effectively hit a 6'x6' steel plate at 982m with my current .308. I want to be able to shoot this distance and further even more accurately than I can do now. I feel that I can not squeeze anything else from my rem700 to get it further out there or make it more accurate and this is why I'm considering the .300win mag and the .338LM.

I have a .338LM TRG, i have traded my pimped 700 in 300wm for it and i love it, you can expect to reach (on good day) far better than 6'x6'.
i have do search for few month before ending buying mine, here is a little review that can also help you http://demigodllc.com/articles/military-338-lapua-rifles-trg42-awsm/?p=1
i MAY be wrong BUT my final decision was based on the Stealth one have a chrome libed barrel wich can strech barrel life to 8000 round, don't know if TRUE but i'am satisfied with mine.
to me, OUT OF THE BOX, bang for your buck,(for the price) you can't beat the TRG but ATRS ans other can build someting better for sure.
One main raison for my choice too is that it is the lightest so i even use it for hunting moose and carobou

Good luck in your search

Then you need to make the acquaintance of some better 'smiths.

Given what you're wanting to do, you should look at the 338 Lapua or 338 Lapua AI. What brand you choose, custom or stocker, is your choice.

I understand the TRG 338 Lapua has a 12" twist barrel and I don't believe this is the best twist for the 300SMK.

The main advantage of the big 338s over the 300 win is the 300SMK. If you are not going to shoot the big 338 bullets it is my opinion that you are better off shooting the 200 grain bullets out of a 300Win. The only exceptions to this are the 250 Scenar and a few other (difficult to get) specialty projectiles.

Shooting the 300Win is 1/2 the price of a big 338. Something to consider...

I have both the TRG 22 and the TRG 42 in the .338 cal. I love both guns from the feel of them to how accurate they are . A friend of mine gave me a load to try for the 42 and it shoots 1 ragged 5 shot hole at 100 yards , incredible gun . As for cost to shoot it is a little expensive however for the feel and what it can do I would not trade it in the world.I have had a trigger problem but with the help of fellow gun nutters and a buddy I believe we have got it figgured out. Barrel life not sure but when I do burn this barrel out I will screw on another keeping the wicked feel of the stock and of course that great Sako action .

I thought the TRG had a press fit barrel and had to be shipped back to the factory for a new barrel?

Not taking anything away from the TRG as they do shoot very well.

the sako trg is a great gun. i have alot of experence with the 22 in .308 and a 42 in 338lp they both do the job with ease. the 338 lp is heavy on the wallet for sure but well worth it. i wouldnt be to concernd with the barrel life. the canadian millitary is useing them with great sucess. i also think that if anything happens with the gun sako will take care of it i think they give out a 2-3 year warrenty for any problems related to manufacturing defects.

Just bought a trg22. Beautiful rifle and a performer from my initial tests. Whether I needed another rifle might be debatable ;) but the fit and finish on this rifle is top end.
