I inherited a Winchester Model 70 (post 64) from my grandfather. It is in great shape, hadn't been shot much before I got it. I'd really like to get a synthetic stock to replace the gorgeous stock that came on the gun.

Looking for thoughts on where to start looking, any reviews of stocks someone has hunted with, any gotchas that they discovered when they replaced their stock.

I'm a pretty handy guy, thought I'd replace the stock myself, but I'm curious about what I need to know about bedding the stock, any mods that people have had to make.

Thanks in advance.

As an owner of a model 70 with a gorgeous wood stock, I am curious as to why you’d want to do that to your Grampa’s rifle? Just curious...

Probably because he would like to use the firearm but doesn't want to mark up the wood on grandpa's rifle. I don't blame him, but have no suggestion other than check with Prophet River. Also you might want to watch sales for same action length and buy a ordinary wood stock as a replacement. Sell the donor action or have two rifles!

You got it, looking for something that I don't mind beating up dragging through the bush. I'd thought of buying a new rifle, but don't really want to have 2 .308's in the closet...

I put a post 64 Win 70 in .270 in a 'drop-in' Ramline mfg synthetic stock. Surprisingly, it shot pretty well.
