I am looking to get into hunting. I have decided that I want to get into Deer, Moose, Elk, Bear, Boar, Turkey, and small game. I am thinking about getting a 30 06, 12G shotgun, .22, and an Excalibur crossbow. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The more knowledge I have the better I will be.

With that list, you aint such a stupid puck.;)

Untill youre big game desires become reality, the 30-06 is great to start with... you can fine tune the big game calibre rifles to suit what youll be hunting... same with smaller preadators.

In other words, you might want to add a 338 and a 243 to the mix but that will come in time...:D

Sounds like you got a good mix there. 30-06 is great, so many choices for bullet weights you can tailor them to your needs. I would have to agree with 7mm 243's are awesome deer rifles. I got one last year for my son and ended out using it myself.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Any advice on which make to go with? I have been looking online and prices are all over the map. I have found some that are reasonable, and some that are really expensive. I'm not too sure why they are really expensive? Are some makes better than others? Should I be avoiding some manufacturers?

Sorry for all the questions, I dont have anyone else to ask. None of my family hunts, nor do any of my friends.

Tikka T3 is definitely a good deal at its price point. Just work the glass-smooth action side by side with a Remington or Savage at the same price and I guarantee you will be hooked.

Not saying it outshoots a $2500 custom, but for $600-$800 (depending on model, stainless, etc.) It is great.

I have one in .270win myself.

depends on what calibers are more available in your area, i have heard .303 british is still fairly common in canada, so a sweet enfield could be had for a song, and the .303 also has alot of options for hunting, both large, and medium sized game! did you know that more elephants have been taken with the .303 than any other cartridge in history?, and you could definately take deer, elk, moose, or bear with a .303! the enfield has one of the slickest fast actions in history! and the magazine holding 10 rounds is an added bonus!

you could also see if you can get your hands on an ishapore enfeild that was made in india, and chambered in the .308/7.62x51mm nato round! i have one that has a 12 round magazine, and i got 5 more mags for it, bad ass rifle it is, and tougher than a tire iron!

as far as .22 rifles go, the ruger 10/22 is king down here in america, and shotguns you wont go wrong with a remington 870, or mossberg 500, so long as its in .12 gauge, ammo shouldnt be an issue as the .12 gauge is the most common, at least in america that is, so i think its a world standard lol!!!

Ok, here's the deal the way I see it...If you're just starting out don't break the bank on your first gun because you'll more than likely want something else in the near future. For brands, in my opinion it is really hard to beat a savage package deal. 350.00-450.00 will get you a rifle with bases, scope and sling. Also the accuracy will be as good or better than anything out there to even double the price. If you still like the rifle after a year or two you can do a little customizing ex: after market trigger, upgrading the stock or scope or even threading on a new barrel of a different calibre.
What ever you buy remember, if you're having fun with it...it was worth the money you spent.

i have a .303 british #4 mark 1 great gun no kick to it but be sure to check your land and grooves where some only have 2 grooves and as for mine i have 5 very straight shooting . came with a 10 round mag and stumbled upon a 5 round mag

"...you can't hunt w/ center fire rifles in SW Ont..." Nonsense. While there are some municipalities that restrict the calibre to .275 or under(some say .270), by the cartridge name, but saying centre fire's are not allowed in Southern Ontario is just not true.
There are no wild pigs in Southern Ontario. Don't think there are any on game farms either.
Elk hunting is new for 2011, is on a draw basis and only in certain WMU's.

A .30-06 will kill any game in North America, subject to local laws. You may want to think about a varmint calibre rifle, as well. A .243 will give you a varmint rifle and a deer/bear rifle. A 6.5 x 55 will give you a varmint, deer, bear and moose(elk too if you get selected) rifle and be legal in any municipality. So will any of the assorted .25 or .26 calibres. Which rifle for anything will depend on your budget.
