Looking for some advice

Hello fellow Nutz,

I'm getting into hunting and am looking for an accurate but affordable rifle to start off with. So far I've decided to go with a 30-06 but I have no idea what manufacturer to go with. I've checked out the Remington's but I've heard mixed reactions about it. I've also seen some reasonably priced rifles by Stevens but I don't know much about them. Any and all help is appreciated.
 
I've heard before that Stevens are more or less non AccuTrigger Savages. That doesn't take anything away from them of course, but does anyone know for certain?
A good friend of mine bought his kid a Mossberg ATR in a .270 and he says it shoots like a house on fire, and most of them are under 400 bucks at Wholesale Sports.

Remington 700 SPS blued or stainless...

Stevens 200...

Savage Package rifles blued or stainless [with scope]...

Mossberg ATR...

Probably any of the above will shoot better than you can right outta the box... ;)
 
you'll get a hundred different opinions

go to a well stocked hunting shop and handle as many different types of rifles as you can, and pick the one you like the best

yuck.. don't get a savage PACKAGE rifle...

buy a scope seperately.
 
Keep an eye open on the EE.Great deals pop up on gently used to as new rifles. For what you'd pay with tax etc on a new low end rifle you can pick up a higher end piece right here. Put a WTB ad out and see what you get.

The savages, SPS's, ATR etc. are all good but you won't regret getting a higher quality rifle like a 700, CZ, or Tika

A lot of these guys will give a fellow starting out a bit of a break and it's a hell of a lot more fun this way.:D

Remington is always a good choice.
Look for Winchester model 70, they are still out there and some sell them in low prices. Also Tikka T3 is not a bad choice.

Best advice yet. Fit is one, if not the, most important aspect of picking a new rifle. Make sure it feels good to you before you plunk down your hard earned dough.
 
I had a Remington and actually hated the thing. Shot very well but mechanicly sucked! trigger, mag, safty, all had problems in the first year I owned it. Just bought an new T3 stainless light .300 win mag and love it. I also have a savage target modle in .308 that shoots honest 1 raged hole groups with hand loads. IMO that Savage is hard to beat for the money and the accu trigger is very nice to operate.
 
My advise would be to try and buy a nice used 30.06 or 280 in a older model Rem 700 pre 1995 or even older are better,get it checked out that its barrel etc is good and you won't go wrong, if you droped off a cliff and action is okay you can get $400 + in a heart beat and more for a short action like in .308 win
