So i have just started duck hunting and I need a new gun. Right now I'm running my a400 excel and I love it but I don't want to take it duck hunting it's my wife's favorite trap gun and it's in perfect condition. So what I'm looking for is a bit of a cheaper alternative. What have you guys run for a semi duck gun that is say between 500-1500$. As always any help is appreciated.

Yea if you shoot well with the a 400 then find a gun that matches its stock dimensions.

The FN designed Winchester and browning guns do not have much drop at comb nor drop at heel. I have a rather long neck and even with shims could never get my Sx3 to fit well. I went back to Winchester USA made 1300s which have similar stock dimensions to the benelli and franchi guns.

I have the kick off stock so I'm not expecting anything with the same recoil but I'm fine with that. I will look at the guns suggested. And I have become good at adjusting to firearms so the differance in stocks should not be a problem.

I have a long neck and need a lot of drop at comb, and the SX-3 fit me out of the box. Even using the shims, I couldn't get enough drop at comb with the A400. The Browning Maxus and Silver also fit me well.

Agree 100%. The comment made my Winchested has been the complete opposite to my experience. Brownings and Winchesters have much more drop then the Italian guns...namely Beretta, Benelli and Franchi

So I tried the Browning and a stoeger m3500 tonight. The Browning is really nice and it's on for 1299$ seems fair. The stoeger was not as nice and it was only a few hundred less so i think thats off the table. I will try the Winchester tommorow. And like a dumb ass I tried a few more berettas knowing I can't talk my wife into letting my by a 2500$ gun.

Some great deals out there on the Winchester SX-3 right now. The Browning Silver operates on the same principles as SX-2/SX-3. I have a Browning Gold - similar system but a heavyweight.
Randy Wakeman has little good to say about the new model Winchester SX-4.
Buy the one that fits, then look at cosmetics, and then price. While stocks are somewhat adjustable on the current generation of semi-auto shotguns, every model does not fit all.

Winchester SX-4 has worked well for me. Not perfect by any means, but a good value in the price point. 3.5" gun perfectly cycles all shells I've put through it, from 2.75" to 3.5" no problem. Bolt handle is prone to falling out, replacement parts are very hard to get in Canada at this point. Shares many parts with the SX-3 and the Maxus. Actually it's more of an entry level Maxus than an evolution of the SX-3. Truth be told, I wish I had spend an extra $400 on a Maxus.

I've tried them all - 391 Urika 2, A400, SBE2, Vinci, etc... and the only one I still like is the Maxus. Fits perfectly, VERY light, and 100% reliable. I couldn't get used to the safety in front of the trigger on the Berettas (I'm also a LH shooter), and found the recoil on the Inertia guns to be 'springy' and kinda distracting.

The a400 is gas. I find i can adapt to guns ok but I prefer the safety up front I find it a Smooth transition from safety to trigger.

Ha yes I know the A400 is gas. I try not to reverse my safeties (keep them RH) since I'm most used to the Rem 870/110 series. Muscle memory is quite a thing. This makes the Berettas tough to use.

Did you try a VersaMax? Excellent gun, and probably the softest shooting semi on the market. Have had one for 5 years, love it, and NO PROBLEMS in any weather, or any load of shells.
