well i have a remington SPS tactical on the way.if you have some nice loads that work on your 20" remington 700.can you pm me of post here.right now im going to start will varget powder ,win brass, and 168gr bullets.

The load used to give you the most velocity in a 24" barrel, will also give you the most velocity in a 20" barrel.

Wasn't this the idea behind the Ruger Compact Magnum line of cartridges though? I would agree more barrel = more time for the gas to accelerate the bullet.

But ruger was saying something about the RCM loads being designed to get the bullets up to their maximum speed in a 20" barrel, rather than in a 24 as usual. I would guess using faster burning powder to try to get more gas volume quicker.

Your thoughts on this?

44 gr. of IMR 4064 with 180 gr. bullets, or

47 gr. of RL15 with 150 gr. bullets / WW brass / LR primers.

Works with most bullets; adjust slightly to taste.

I have never loaded for a stubby little barrel like that:p If you are only shooting short range, 300m or less 39 gr of 3031 with 168's works ok.

I'm running 44gr of IMR 4895 with 165 and 168's at 2750fps. Mine is also a 20" barrel. That load is over book max, so work up...I have also worked up to 46.5gr of Varget with no problems.

I have a Remington 600 Mohawk with an 18.5 inch barrel, I shoot 165 grain Hornady Interlocks over 46 grains of Reloder 15. This load got a 1 inch group at 200 yds. I haven't got the chance to chrony the load yet, a buddy who has the same rifle got 2600+++ with this load. Of course, work up slowly.:D

I run 46g Varget with 155 Lapua sceners, and win brass and fed210 primers not sure of speed but shoots .4 at 100m and rings the 24 inch gong at 1125yards no problem but every gun shoots different. Have fun shoot lots

You have to work up the load for your rifle. No two rifles will shoot the same ammo the same way.
That a Model 700 XCR Compact Tactical? Remington doesn't show an SPS Tactical. Either way the rifling twist is 1 in 12 for an XCR. The SPS has 1 in 10. Same rifle with a different finish and barrel anyway. Think lighter bullets. Mind you, I'd certainly try a 168, but you'll likely find the 155's will shoot better.
"...That load is over book max..." Nope. Close to max(45.5 compressed for a 165. 45.4 compressed for a 168 with IMR4895 are max loads.), but not over. What book do you have?

Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 Win Mfr # 84207. There is nothing common between the SPS Tactical and the XCR Compact Tactical, even the trigger is different.

The stock on the SPS is a Hogue, the XCR stock is a B&C. The SPS is matte black CM. The XCR is black trinyte finished Stainless and is fluted. The SPS has the X-Mark trigger, the XCR has the 40-X trigger. There is also about $600 difference in price...

43.1gr max in the Lee book, 44gr max in Barnes book (yes I'm shooting TSX too), and 45.5gr Hodgdon site. Take your pick. I'm getting the same numbers as Hodgdon has, only I'm 1.5gr less powder and 4" shorter on the barrel.:)

Might be hard to get that high with the Rem S/A, as you can't seat out as far with the longer bullets...

Sapper33, I have read the reports of tests made on this subject, what powder for a shorter barrel.
We are talking rifle barrels and 20 inch or 24 inch is a typical difference.
In every test I read about, they found that the powder and load that gave the best velocity at 24 inches, would also give the best velocity from a 20 inch barrel.
