Looking for some nice wood for my 870

I've been playing with a wingmaster receiver I picked up from the EE. I cobbled together a nice little gun with a 18'' take off barrel and an old riot stock set ( also off the EE) The gun is fun to shoot but I'm already looking to change it up. A threaded Dlask 14'' is in the works but what I'm really wanting is a another walnut riot stock set, but with some nice figure to the wood. I refinished the old set and it's lacking what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a place that duplicates the pattern but offers a better grade of wood with it?

Are you looking for premium hand-picked wood? If so, then you might be better served posting this in the other shotgun forum. But I could be wrong, I've never looked in there.

For the price of a premium stock set, you might be able to buy three "regular" wood stock sets from Numrich or Brownells. Mix and match, pick your favourites of the litter, refinish as desired, and sell the others on the EE for a small profit.

I'm just looking for some wood with a bit of figure to it. I don't need exhibition grade wood as I still intend to shoot the hell out of this thing, I just want to have something different than the typical short black shotgun.

I'm not sure if the "riot stock" I purchased is any different from the standard buttstock but I don't see anybody advertising reproductions. It may be best to buy a few regular sets and pick through them.

Yo dude! Check out Dlaskarms they got 870 stock sets. I picked up a set and was real pleased with it like new , real nice grain pattern . And only 45 bucks I think . any hey go check it out. Best of luck!

Thank you for the advice. I ended up getting a great old walnut police stock set off a fellow gun nut. It was already refinished but I'm anal retentive and had to play with it myself. I've fitted a grind to fit limbsaver, wet sanded with tung oil for 5 coats and have rubbed another 3 into it already. It looked good before but she's looking really good now. I'll have to post a pic when it's all done.

Wood is awesome. I just found a horde of wood furniture for my Mossberg. Some good deals can be found on the EE.

I picked up my first set off the ee. Lesson learned, I should have asked for more pic's. What was explained to me as "not bad" was pretty beat up. I'll chalk it up to a difference of opinion. That being said the set I'm working with was bound for the EE so there are gem's to be had........ just be sure what you're happy with what is being sent your way. I've also managed to spruce up my first stock set and it will be destined for the EE. Don't get me wrong, the EE is great I just wished everybody would be totally honest about what they are selling on there.

The thing about wood is that if you start using the shotgun, it'll get marked up anyway. I like stocks that have character, sometimes stripping them and refinishing without sanding out all the imperfections. If a wood stock is too nice, you won't want to shoot the gun because you'll screw up the stock. I bought 5 sets of Mossberg wood and they're all pretty decent.

This set cost me $45 shipped and it was nice enough just to slap on my 500. Wood just looks awesome on a shotgun.

Bought a cheap M44 and the stock was brutally ugly. Nicks, gouges, scrapes, black spray paint, you name it.

Cleaned it up, stripped and refinished while keeping all the blemishes. It came out pretty good, especially for my first try at any type of woodworking. Have to thank YouTube.

Woah...that's stunning!

Where might I find a set like that?!?!

Finding that set was luck on my part. A fellow gun nut seen the start of this thread and offered the set to me. There are some nice sets on the older 870's. I picked up another wingmaster for the father in law that was built before 1967. I stripped the stock and found similar dark walnut under the layers of finish someone else had applied. I think she'll turn out quite similar to the first one.

How do you identify if it's walnut or not? How do you identify any type of wood you are working on, especially old stocks?

Honestly all I did was look at the grain pattern with both sets I'm working on. I could see a bit of figure under the finish so I took a shot at it. Someone smarter than I could tell you how to identify the wood but with the heavy, thick crap that gets put on the stocks it can be really hard to identify. I know this because the first one I bought turned out to be beech wood or some other kind of "hardwood". I couldn't see any sort of grain in the pics when I was looking but I bought it anyway. Ask for some good pics is all I can tell you.
