curious which round you fellas would recommend for pushing up to 1500m ?

.338 is wildy expensive and .50 is just plain out of the question because of price.

i was thinking .300mag ?

perhaps 7mm mag or a 25-06 ?



im not the most capable long range shooter.. but i would lik eto have the ability to push out further for my next rig.. also need the factory ammo factor as my reloading-fu is weak
 
Any of the 7mm mags pushing the high BC bullets will get you there. No problem getting to 1200 with the 6.5's, but I haven't pushed them past that, couldn't see why they wouldn't.....less barrel life though.

Just noticed your factory ammo requirement......take a look at the .260Rem or 6.5x55 then.
 
300 Remington Ultra or 300 Weatherby shooting Berger 210, Sierra 220 or 240 grain match bullets. With G1BC's in the .7's, heavy 30's are tough to beat for long range accuracy.
 
First problem is that factory ammo is rarely set up with bullets that work well at these distance. Reloading will drop your cost down significantly and give you lots of options. All the common and popular magnum cartridges are loaded with hunting bullets.

However, with factory ammo as a limiting factor, what is the availability of Hornady 6.5 Creedmore or Lapua 6.5X47 in your area? Likely the most accurate options with bullets that can make the trip. I would go with the Creedmore as it is bigger.

I would also suggest the 6BR but I doubt they are loaded with anything interesting from Lapua.

If you can reload, you can start as small as a fast twist 223 and 80gr Amax/Bergers.

However, I feel the 6.5 and 139gr Lapua/140gr Berger/142gr MK at 2900fps is pretty tough to beat for an inexpensive plinker with great ballistics and decent barrel life. I have pushed my 6.5 Mystic to 2400yds so distance is not the issue.

Scope elevation IS. You will likely need to look at scopes with lots of elevation adjust and shim your scope accordingly. Mildot and picket fence reticles will come in very handy as hold off will be significant at those distances and you can set your close range zero on the upper part of the reticle to maximize elevation adjustment.

If you can reload and just want a factory rifle, the simplest would be a heavy barreled Savage in 7RM or 300WM. Load up an appropriate VLD and have at it.

Today, 1 mile is really not all that far...

For what purpose?? Paper or actually killing something?
The 6.5s and 7s will certainly do paper at that distance, but will only piss off anything live that you may hit.
300 Win mag will certainly make it on paper and with the 200 plus ULD bullets MAY still have enough to kill smaller game. The 300RUM loaded with 210 to 240s will still have just enough energy left in order to kill effectively provided you are spot on with the shot.
More info on the intent would make the advice more specific and useful.

.300RUM was one i had considered at length.

nice to know that it would still have the power to drop a smaller target ( thinking wild goat size ) .. but i doubt that i would be shooting a target that far away..
mainly just for paper..
im planning to get better at reloading, but at present, i am definately a reloading noob
