New to precision shooting and looking for someone, or company, in Ontario that offers intro training. Really looking to lay in a field and get some guidance from someone experienced. I am more than willing to compensate accordingly. I have my own LR rifle setup which is capable of reaching beyond 1000 yards, I need the training to make it happen. Cheers and thanks in advance!

Are you near any active clubs that practice any kind of long range shooting, or have matches?

Unfortunately, not that I know of. I was on a waiting list at CFB Borden for an intro course but that didn't materialize (I was too low on the waiting list for this year). Don't want to wait until next year and have that happen again. The nearest range to me only has 100 yards and I am not yet a member.

My suggestion would be to join the club even if it is only 100 yards, and practise there until you can find someone to you with a place to shoot at longer distances Remember the basics of shooting are the same at 100 as they are at 1,000.
Join the ORA as well.

Solid advice. Thanks

To get you going I would suggest joining up to the local range even of it only has 100 yards, I would also pick up a decent 22LR precision type rifle (I have a CZ 457 MTR that I regularly push out to 300M) as it would be a good fit for those distances and not cost much to shoot.

100 Yards is fine for CF but you wont learn much about dialling / drop etc (thats what the 22LR will teach you in the meantime) so I would look for somewhere with more distance so you can take full advantage of the rifles capabilities.

I ended up wanting to fast track my learning and took the Rob Furlong precision lvl 1 course. It is a bit far for you being in Alberta, but there were quite a few folks from Quebec and Ontario in my cohort. LVL 1 goes to 1KM and beyond if there is time. Some of our guys had time to reach out to a mile.

It really was a fantastic foundational course covering scope dope/adjustments, wind call calculation, prone shooting positioning, spotting/correction calls, introduction to reading mirage and wind speed.

I saw posts that a guy in Ontario took all his gear to the States and did a week long course there, similar to what Onizuka mentioned, but probably a shorter drive.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Rob Furlong course. Sounds like exactly what I am after. Will see if I can find someone in ON first before planning that massive road trip. Cheers!

it is a bit of a pain, but you can fly! Just a bunch of rules for flying with a firearm.

The facility is fantastic, but it really is in the middle of nowhere. But I guess that is what it takes to have a 9KM long piece of land!

Any precision rifle can do 1000 just the matter of your group size.

And you can practice in crown land for longer distance or join other clubs which have 200 or 300 rifle ranges.

Maybe define your shooting discipline and what gears you have first?

And consider to start reloading.

I used to practice for 1000 yd by shooting .22short at 100 yd on scaled down targets. Small slow bullets gave good practice dealing with wind.

Another recommendation to sit/lay at 100 yds til you can pile them all in the same hole. Then find 200yds and do the same. If you want to get better at first shot impact, get a ballistic application for your phone.
