Looking for Soule style sights for my Pedersoli Sharps

Hi folks,
I've been to the range twice now with my new pedersoli sharps and I've already outgrown the cheap vernier tang site that I have on it. The aperture is way too big and the windage adjustment is useless.

I've read a bunch of forum posts about the various Soule sights you can buy in the US. The Kelley's and Lee Shavers look like good options and there seems to be no way around dropping at least $300 - $400 buck on one.

Does anybody have any experience shooting competitively with any of these sights? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, I can't seem to find a Canadian business that sells them. I'd rather buy em here if I can. Anybody know where I might find them?

I think that old BPCR bug has bit me hard! Just started reloading, soon I'll be casting. Before I know I'll be divorced!

Much obliged for your insights,
Big Bear

Not sure what model of Sharps you have or tang sights that came with it. You can start by changing your eye cup out with a Hadley cup which has several diopters to choose from which improves your sight picture considerably.

Marstar has Pedersoli premium Soule sights for differant ranges available. These sights are different and better than the ones that come with rifles from the factory. MVA and BA in the US both have sights available and will ship to Canada. I have a long range Pedersoli Soule sight with a Hadley cup on one rifle and it does very well at all ranges, probably better that what I can see.

What ever your choice good luck. Post some pics of your rifle and sights.

I haven't used the Kelly sights, but I've used a lot of the others. Some might disagree, but I'm not a fan of the Shaver soule sights. I recently removed one of my Lee Shaver deluxe sights. The windage marks on the base are very hard to read and if you are constantly adjusting windage between shots it's easy to lose track of where you are. I like the MVA soule sights quite a bit more, although they are a fair bit pricier, especially after you add a Hadley eye cup.

I have heard that the Kelley, and Baldwin sights are quite good too.

Another option is the Ukrainian made sights, which seem to have a good reputation and reasonable prices. They're available in Canada, apparently from

"Red River Sights

Dept. B, 206 Oxford Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3M 3J6
Phone: (866) 239-9451 (best to call after 6 pm CST)
Email: red.river.a.a.p@mts.net, Note, a web site address is not available

Red River supplies Ukrainian made sights previously offered by Parts
Unknown Inc. Red River sights are also sold by Buffalo Arms."

If you look around BPCR sites, they've been discussed a fair bit.

one thing you might want to check for is having click stops on the vertical adjustment. A friend who was very much into competitive shooting bought an otherwise good tang sight but got rid of it because he had to rely exclusively on the vernier for adjustments. His replacement sight not only had the vernier but also click stops so that if he was shooting low at any given range he could go up say 4 clicks and know how much higher the gun was going to shoot

Hey, Big Bear, how are ya? I have a Pedersoli Gibbs, with a Soule type sight, which came with the rifle. I don't mind it, but then I haven't tried competing with it yet. What I did do was what MC Oneshot suggests... add a Hadley eye cup. I got mine from Buffalo Arms in Idaho. It makes a huge difference for my old eyes, I can focus very well on the front sight and target, in most light conditions, without my glasses. Obviously, it doesn't address the windage issue, but I think it did far more to improve my shooting than a $400 sight. As always, YMMV.

I had a Pedersoli Sharps that came with a pinhead style hooded front sight and the mid-range staff at the rear. First I installed a Lyman #17 front globe ($30) with the set of inserts and my second improvement was to replace the rear aperature with a Hadley ($100) for different light conditions. That combo proved reasonably competitive to 300 yds even though I did without a bubble level and rear sight windage adjustment. If you want to move up then you are looking at serious $$ as in $520 USD for an MVA rear Vernier with Hadley and about $175 USD for an MVA globe front sight with bubble level. I have the latter combo on a new Winchester 1885 and it works very well indeed. I guess you need to decide just how competitive you want to be but the Sharps upgrade mentioned above was a good start while I worked to improve my bullet casting and cartridge loading techniques. If you decide to get a Hadley for your Pedersoli then PM me as I kept mine when I sold the Sharps only to find it would not interchange onto the MVA I put on the Win. 1885. I haven't heard any good reports about the Red River sights and haven't seen or tried them myself.

If you buy cheap ,you will end up replacing it as you get better Red River are quality sights ,Lee Shaver makes very good stuff and MVA are on most rifles at most of the silhouette shoots across Canada and the USA . Welcome to the VERY addictive sport ,now next thing for you to buy will be a small motorhome with a onboard reloading station to get out and travel to all these shoots. Buy the wife a rifle and bring her along.

Thanks to all for some great advice. I researched all of the options presented here and I think it would be hard to go wrong with any one of the recommendations I got.
After hearing that Lee Shaver was an approachable guy I decided to drop him a line. Turns out he can sell me a Hadley eye cup that will fit the cheapo vernier sight I have now. When I decide to upgrade - assuming my skill level ever surpasses the abilities of my current sight - the Hadley cup will fit any of his other quality sights. Based on the feedback from MC Oneshot and easyrider the better eye cup alone should improve my shooting. I imagine that when I feel confident enough to compete I'll need a better sight but in the meantime I can save a few bucks to buy casting supplies so I can shoot more. Which is what its all about in the end anyway!
Thanks again to all who responded.
