Looking for thoughts and experiences with the new Remington 870 Fieldmaster

Hey guys

I’m looking for anyone who might have experience with the “new improved” Remington 870 Fieldmaster.

Thinking of picking one up (12ga with a 28” barrel) to try out this duck season. I’ve seen a few YouTube videos and guys seem impressed with them, compared to older guns. Consistently hearing they’re smooth as a Wingmaster, but more built to put up with the abuse of a duck blind.

Any thoughts and particularly experience or testing would be great.

Nope, I'd say neither of these are what I was asking. My hesitation with a wingmaster is 3" versions seem to go for about the same price as a new Fieldmaster and I'd prefer the matte finish.
 
Haven’t seen one in person, that said the general consensus is that they are nicely built. I wouldn’t worry about the difference between a matte vs blued finish either, pick the one you prefer and keep it clean and oiled.

I’ve used my matte 870 express in the pouring rain and is doesn’t have any rust issues, I dry it properly and wipe it with an oily rag. Exactly what I do with my blued guns that go out in the rain.

Go handle a fieldmaster and see for yourself, most 870 purists won’t say anything is better than a Wingmaster.

Just be aware that the matte blued finish is more prone to rust .... than a highly polished blued finish like the Wingmaster has ...

It is my understanding that Remarms still uses the same bluing process for the Fieldmaster as Remington used for the Express line of 870s .... And the Express 870s were known for rusting .... There are many reports out there ....


The Fieldmaster seems to be a fine gun .... and from the reports that I have seen ..... it seems to be manufactured with better quality control than Remington Express 870s before the bankruptcy.

However, the matte bluing finish isn't the most rust resistant finish. You will need to keep a Fieldmaster well oiled ... and try to keep it away from moisture/water .... and if it gets wet ... give it the proper attention, treatment and care ...

Otherwise the Fieldmaster seems to be a good gun in my opinion ....

Disclaimer 1: I own and have owned many 870s ... Wingmasters, Police, Express, Special Purpose, Marine, Tac-14 .... etc. And I never had a problem with rust with any of them .... because I keep all my guns well oiled .... and if they get wet .... they are well taken care off at the end of the day ...

Disclaimer 2: And I don't have any actual experience with the Fieldmaster .... my knowledge is only from reading reports.

You asked for thoughts. We gave them. If a new Fieldmaster is selling for the same money as Wingmasters tend to go for......draw your own conclusions. Typically you get what you pay for in new guns.

But, but it is a "NEW" and "Improved" Wingmaster...
To the Op, buy the one that you like and give a field report on your findings.
Duck and Goose season is not far away and dont forget you are going to need the best ammo for your new gun.

Always had good luck with Kent Fast Steel #2 or #4 and a mod choke.

I'll leave an update if/when I get one.
 
So the Fieldmaster is an improved Express? Better wood, metal finishing, and some added features. Sounds like machining quality is better in reviews.

OP, I don't think you'd go wrong by picking one up, it's still an 870 after all. Then you can be the resident 870 Fieldmaster reviewer and guru.
