Looking into getting my first rifle

Hello everyone,

I hope this is the right forum for this, I am going to be going for my PAL and RPAL soon and I am just looking around for tips and suggestions for what is a good first rifle that will not break the bank.

I saw a Lakefield-Mossberg MKIII the other day for 95$ but as I dont have any license yet I could not buy it. I am thinking it will be a .22LR for my first. A bit later I will most likely get an SKS but the ammo is so much more expensive.

A quick question, last summer I spent a day shooting with some friends in Vegas, I was using a Smith & Wesson 617 revolver and a rifle, but I do not know what kind it was (it was a .22LR), can anyone identify the gun from this picture? The guy there who showed me how to use it said I looked like a dirty liberal and I was lucky he wanted to teach me how to shoot, so sorry about that.

Any suggestions for a non-restricted first rifle that will not break the bank will be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot!
 
May I suggest you read the forums on how to shorten your wait times to get your pal or rpal. It can be a very long process after you take the cource but there are a few tips to make it go a little quicker. Sorry to get off topic but I thought it might be helpful for you to be aware of this since you are shopping before you take the cource.

Thanks I took a look at that topic and I will certainly send it in registered mail and have my references phone in. I will also send it in as soon as I pass as is suggested since I live in Ontario. Hopefully there will be no delays.

Also thanks chadeech for your suggestions the Savage is quite a bit more expensive it seems, but the other two are pretty good choices.
 
The rifle looks like a Savage Mark II FVT

Any Mark II will be a good starting point for a .22lr rifle, though that particular model is meant for use with the supplied sights. There are heavy-barrel models meant for scope use (FV models), standard barrels with regular irons, you name it.
 
You should look at buying a first firearm as an investment not just in money but in time. Buying the best quality .22 that you can afford will ensure that the time you spend shooting it is well spent.
That said, a single shot Lakefield will likely prove cheaper to buy but will be much more accurrate than a stock semi automatic Ruger 10/22. However both are fun to shoot and each have different strenghts for inexpensive rifles in their respective classes.
It's fun to test your skill using the single shot and its equally fun to let 25 round go in a few seconds.
Personally, I would buy a browning buckmark or their other semi auto model as they hold their value well, are desirable in the used gun market, accurate and have a rapid rate of fire with a 10 round mag.
 
10/22 for if you want to have some fun in a semi. If you want to have fun and shoot accurately with a semi, look to Marlin and Savage: both are cheaper than the 10/22 and are much more accurate.

But, for your first gun I'd go with a bolt-action. The Savage MkII is superb for the price, and the Marlin XT series shoots like a rifle worth three times as much. If you have a fair sized bankroll though, look to a CZ; you wouldn't need another bolty .22 - They're a bit more expensive, but you get great fit and finish as well as top-end accuracy.
 
Go with a Ruger 10/22...I recently bought one and it's a blast! Between my Girlfriend, her daughters, and myself, we put 625+ rounds thru it last weekend. I had a Savage Model 3b bolt growing up and I never thought a 22lr could be fun to shoot till I got my hands on a 10/22. I'd have to say their one of the coolest civilian rifles ever built.
 
Take a look at the Savage MKII FV-SR (.22 LR)... best bang for your buck and a really nice rifle... for less money than the FVT... looks great in a Boyd's stock.
 
Thanks a lot everyone for all the suggestions, you're giving me a lot to think about here! If it is indeed a Savage I have in the picture (it sure looks like it) I may end up getting one of those because it was really quite accurate in my opinion (not worth that much I know) and everyone seems to be talking very highly about it, but there is alot of good being said about the 10/22 so luckily I have time to make up my decision before I get my license
 
10/22 is a terrible choice for a beginner. If you like to do builds, spend a lot more out of pocket to get it to look like you want and shoot like you want, then why not. But for a beginner there are many better choices. A savage or marlin bolt will suit your needs very well, and teach you the fundamentals.
Take care of your guns and you will always be able to sell it for relatively close then what you paid for it.

but for your first rifle, I'd say get a bolt action. nothing to complicated because if it takes you an hour to clean it your not going to want to take it out anymore.
