Looking to build an affordable "scout" rifle

Looking to build an affordable "scout" rifle which will likely be carried/squireled away than shot but needs to be reliable/practically accurate of course.

I have a couple of lever guns in a tactical approach so am looking for this rifle to be true to the short/bolt action style.

What have people used for base rifles/actions and how have they turned out for you?
Scope mounts/stocks and other items used?

Enfield based guns? Remmy?
I think I would like to go 308 for common/easy to source/inexpensive ammo options now and in the future.

Who has the Savage scout? Seems hard to beat for the $$ if buying new?
I must admit I like planning and pulling off projects with my gunsmith though....more fun!

Maybe some pics of finished projects/rifles would be a cool thread no??
 
I have a Savage Scout in .308 that I bought about 4 years ago.

I mounted a 2.5 X Burris Scout Scope on it.

I love the combo, the gun is light, fast handling, has a detachable 4 round mag, ghost ring sights and is extremely accurate. It is capable of shooting less than 1 inch at one hundred yards.

I bought the gun and scope through Epp's for less than a grand, if I recall correctly.

I recommend it. I've used mine for deer hunting and it is easy to hump through the woods all day.

Oh, I forgot to add that I also built a Norc M14 scout with a springfield mount and Eotech. It also cost about a grand (barrel cutting, mount, flash-hider). It's much heavier than the Savage, not as accurate but was a fun project and is fun to shoot. I've also taken deer with it.

I'm a big fan of Scout rifles

A pal of mine has a low priced rig that you might consider is you can stand to shoot it. It's a Mosin Nagant M-38 Carbine with a Burris Scout Scope attached to a base in the rear sight assembly. With surplus 7.62X54R surplus ammo this thing shoots quite well, but when I shot my own MN I found that 7.7 bullets were to large and 7.62 bullets were to small for best accuracy.

Built this one out of a bubba'd Mauser M96, to use as my truck gun a few years ago.

Specs:
-6.5x55mm original barrel crowned at 20"
-Williams Peep Sight
-2.5x Fitco Scout Scope (will replace with a Burris whenever it quits working)
-Weaver base for a T/C Contender
-Butler Creek Stock
-Ching type Sling made out of a couple C7 Slings

It doesn't make "Scout Weight" as defined by Col. Cooper, but it's accurate, handles well and can be fed by stripper clips which I think is the biggest advantage to scout type rifles.

Mausers are pretty accurate guns, they just suffer from poorly placed back sights. I've shot an FR8 in matches and done quite well. The back sight is on the rear receiver bridge - just like your M96 now has. That is the only place for a back sight.

Nice rifle ZuluMike

This is pretty much what I'm after although I want to go 308 for ammo availability and price.
Like your setup and camo job a lot!
Something like that in an Enfield action would be nice I think.
 
A bonus with the Ruger Frontier model is that it comes the mounts/rings. That and I think the stone matte finish on the stainless looks damn good.

Another consideration is the Remington BLR, which uses a scount scope mount

This is my 30-06 "scout" built on a 1903 Springfield action. The scope is a 2x30mm red dot, Made the forward rail by modifying a weaver or some sort. Barrel is 20", Olive drab KG GUNKOTE and modified Richards stock, shortened front and back to compact the project.

If I ever get around to shooting it regularly it will end up sporting a 2.5x scope instead of the red dot. Built it with treestand and bears in mind.:)
