I knew better but I bought a cheap $100 spotting scope anyway...

SURPRISE, IT SUCKS! :)

No eye relief, poor definition and dark image. And shakey tripod too. Bleugh.

I'm looking for suggestions on a better spotting scope, one that'll last me for a while. Using it at the range only, mostly just out to 200.

Budget... $500 max for sure, but prefer $300-400

Can you guys give me a couple good suggestions in my budget?

Take a look it what site sponsor Cameraland has to offer. They can ship spotting scopes to Canada without any problems. Don't forget to check their Demos page, can usually find a real good deal there.

Look at:

The Vortex Viper (if you can find one)

The Bushnell Elite 15-45 (Usually in the $450-$550 range)

The Leupold Gold Ring 15-30 X 50 is a gorgeous scope for only $500, but it's kinda low on magnification

For a step below those three, try the Vortex Nomad or the Bushnell Legend. They're both under $400. But you'll see a larger improvement with those first 3.

How about a good set of 12x binos? I was thinking of getting myself a spotter last year, but thought I would just put that into a better quality set of binoculars and they work just fine at the range out to 200 yards.

For picking out .224" bullet holes in a black bullseye at 200 yards, I prefer much more magnification.

Vortex Viper would be a decent spotter for the money without breaking the bank, but if you have a bank to break, then go the their Razor lineup:)
