Looking to spend under $1000 please help, something that is cool. Cool I mean, has a magazine or a cool muzzle brake. I really like the short rifles, I was eyeing up a short Spanish mauser in .308.

A M38 Swede was my first milsurp rifle (1980). I still have it and shoot it regularly. Paid 80 bucks. You can still pick up nice ones in the 350-400 range. Excellent value in my mind. My most accurate military rifle with handloaded jacketed bullets.

No love for the SKS? Best deal of the century. I bought a beat-up one in 90's for more than a new one is selling for now. Ammo is cheap. What's not to like?

There's no reason for any PAL holding Canadian to not own an SKS. They're common, affordable, reliable, ammo is nearly on par with the cost of 22lr now, big enough to use to hunt, calm enough for new shooters to enjoy

A south american mauser. Right around the $1000 mark should get you something very nice. A Brazilian 1908 or Argentinian 1909. No muzzle brake and no removable mag, but a very nice. elegant rifle.

M95 Carbine in 8x56r if you like short rifles. Its pretty cool as it has the unique mannlicher clip loading system though depending on the individual rifle the sights can be a bit off at 100m.

Maybe a South American Mauser Carbine those tend to be pretty small and relatively cheap, they can be found in calibers up to 30-06

Or one of my favourite rifles which tend to be pretty cheap, a Portuguese Mauser Vaquero M1904/39, simply because it has one of the smoothest actions imaginable (and they do possess a hinged floor plate).

The list is almost endless... I would sift though EE and see what's there. Personally, I'd get anything Swiss made... they're all excellent. I would also highly suggest one of the premier contract Mausers before they get more expensive, these include the Brazilian 1908 and 1935, Venezuelan model 1930, and the Argentinian. You may still find an unissued, unfired, or very mint condition example. They are among the finest crafted Mausers ever made.

Single shot Martini? They're amazing.

No SKS? Why? The best deal going. You can even find the odd non-refurbished specimen!

If you shoot your rifles much choose something that factory and/or surplus ammo is readily available unless you plan on reloading. Some of the rifles mentioned fire ammo which is not easy to find and/ or expensive. I shoot a 1936 MAS, 8x56R carbine, Swiss K31,6.5 Carcano as well as a 99 Arisaka. All interesting rifles and fun to shoot but if I didn't reload (mostly with cast) they wouldn't go to the range very often. Just something to keep in mind!!

The best milsurps to buy are the types that are being imported and sold in quantity by dealers now. They get sold as surplus by a country and when the stock is sold out, prices climb until another source is found, if ever.

I can just kick myself for the stuff that i didn't buy from the Century catalog in the early '90's because I thought they were common and boring.

No SMLE's? How about a long Lee Enfield or even a Lee Metford!!!
