.... Being on a "fixed income" and really wanting a 7x57 Mauser, ever since as a kid I devoured stories of "Kilimanjaro" Bell, I need a cheap rifle. Is it a viable and low cost conversion to obtain a military barrel in 7x57 (and if so whats the most accurate?) and screw into into an Israeli M98 in .308? I'd assume that the magazine and extractor would work OK, as being roughly the same length? If this is not a viable option, then guess I'll save my pennies and "spring " for a Ruger SS in 7x57 ! Thanks for any input/suggestions, as long as it doesn't involve giving up on getting a 7x57 (I just want one to shoot !) ...David K.

David:
When all is said and done, it may be more cost effective to buy a used 7x57. Most of the military barrels threaded for the Mauser are for a small ring. To find a large ring barrel may take some doing, but not impossible, they are out there.

... I was afraid of that ! I'll keep my options open, there's certianly no great rush on this, and maybe I'll get lucky at one of the Gun Shows ! ... David K.

there are plenty (well ,not quite , but find-able) of Mausers in 7x57.
Now if you were looking for a 7x64, that's a differrent story altogether.

I'd spring for a newer one, because milsurp are adictive. You only save money on the first one you buy.

7x57, and the Milsurp "Bug"

:) .... Had the MILSURP BUG since Dinosaurs walked the Earth ! Got lots of SMLEs, which are my personal "Milsurp of Choice" .... With the 7x57 it's the caliber that appeals, and now I've a set of reloading dies , now to find something to shoot with! (Range only, 'don't hunt anymore).... David K.

Have one of your SMLEs rebarrelled to 7X57R and you will have the best of both. :)

Works slick as a whistle, your dies are correct as well, and no one else will have one .

7mm Mauser

I read your post and realized I was in the same position as you. 'Was in...' That's right, I have just taken possesion of my first 7mm(there is only 'one' 7mm btw!)I was lucky to find a Chilean 1895 made by Lowe, Berlin in near new condition. It has been modified(barrel shortened, bolt turned and scope mounted) but has matching #'s and original stock with the 1895 cartouche. A well made, fine old small ring Mauser, silkey-smooth bolt - a pleasure to hold and shoot! When I was a kid growing up in N. Ontario(in the 50's&60's), my father had a 7mm for years and it was always his favourite rifle and caliber(he was a gun dealer)...he always spoke with a certain reverance about that rifle and he had a real appreciation of the Mauser action in general. I just got my 7mm to the range for the first time yesterday, working up some loads in 145, 150 and traditional 175gr round nose using H380 and Varget...I liked Varget the best but I want to try some round in H 4831 especially with the 175grs.
Good luck on your 7mm quest....they are out there!
