Looking to get a 7mm rifle....

I have owned several 7mm Remington Mags over the years, and they worked just fine. A 160 grain Partition at 3050 fps is pretty effective medicine.

The 7mm STW, Just a great flat shooting 7 that adds about 200 fps to the 7mmRM. Owned several of these as well.

At present, in my 7mm closet, are the following: 700 Classic in 7x57; 700 BDL in 280 Remington; 700 BDL ss in 7mmRSAUM; 700 Custom in 7mm STW.

I think that covers the bases quite well.

FWIW, JP, I have no love for Browning's A-bolt rifles, despite the fact they are usually quite accurate. [hate the triggers and the Magazine system]

Regards, Dave.

I had a Sako in 7STW and it was one of the most accurate rifles I ever owned and I kind of regret selling it but it has since been replaced with a plain old 7RM and I can't think of an instance where the STW would have allowed me to do something the 7RM wouldn't. I doubt I'd ever build another STW. If I wanted another speedster like that, I'd go 6.5 now. In the affordable category, I must say the new Winchester M70s have impressed me.

I've done the vast majority of hunting in the last +25 years with a 7mm RM, a little with the 7x57 and a little with the 7mm-08. I'm curious about the 7mm Weatherby, and 7mm Mashburn, but I doubt I'll ever go to the trouble of either of those. The 7mm RM just seems to work.

I seem to favour 7x57. Reloading opens up a world of options. It just plain works, recoil is manageable, and the cartridge is a proven winner. Some people call it "classy", I call it a "classic". It was the brain child of Paul Mauser himself. That man designed the best bolt action system ever made, and matched that winner with a great cartridge. 120 years later, and I have yet to want something "better".

Yesterday i did order the modular barrel in 7mm for my Steyr Luxus rifle, it now make me a 300 mag/ 375 H&H / 7mm RM modular triplet... JP.

Mmm 7mm Rem Mag, one of my favorite all-rounders. You'll be very happy with it so long as it's not a lightweight little pipsqueak. Your Steyr would be a great rifle in 7mm. A bit of heft and a classy gun to boot. I had an A-Bolt 7mag many years ago and it took plenty of deer as well as a moose and my first and only elk. I didn't love the gun but I loved the cartridge.

my experience with the 7mm is only 7x64: the 7x57, 8x57js and 30-06 were prohibited in those days.

nothing to complaint for Chamois, wild boar and red deer that i hunted for few years.

still think that i need one light for the mountains here ...
