Looking to get a Remington 700

All Remington M700 s are Good ! Just some are more GOODER ! I like the new Model M700 .

Why are they worse than the older ones?
Have you actually seen one, held one ?
I am sure they are not made the same as one of say from the early 80's to mid 90's.
Having said that there are several in the ee right now from 270 to 300 winmags that will shoot better than most entry level guns.

The new Remington 700 is not the same as the older guns. The quality is not the same.
If you've been following the history of The Remington arms company you would have seen that it has gone through bankruptcy and restructuring and has generally been taken over by accountants. The results have been cost cutting measures across the board in an effort to keep the company afloat.
If you can buy an older Rem 700 built in the latter part of the 20th century (preferably pre 1990s then go for it).
Otherwise there are other better options as far as centerfire hunting rifles out there. But it's your money.

Machining wise they are made on new tooling and tighter tolerances and there is no reason they will not shoot as well or better than old rifles.
Finish wise, like in terms of bluing, polish etc the old ones are better...but the newer CDLs and pre current Rem Arms BDLs are still dang nice.
There's no reason to think your rifle won't work great and be a shooter, given the numbers they've turned out. Get one, slap a TriggerTech in it, and go shoot!

Not sure where this crap comes from other than guys that no nothing about rifles / Remington 700's they read it on the internet so it must be true the 700 has out sold all other rifles combined
There never was a trigger problem with the 700 the problem was everyone is a gunsmith so they adjust the trigger have no idea what they are doing they close the bolt the gun fires and shoots ther buddy and it's the veins fault

Thanks so much, this is super helpful! In that case I won’t be too worried about looking for the perfect used model. Do you think the trigger tech upgrade is necessary for newer shooters? In other words, would I even be able to notice it if I’m still a novice?
Unless you happen upon a terrible trigger I doubt you would notice it. I'd suggest finding a rifle you like and forget about any upgrades and CGN for that matter. You will save yourself a lot of money and nonsense trying to find 'the one'!

Buy a 700 .... and shoot it .... !! That will give you a base reference .... and some experience ....
You can always upgrade to a TriggerTech if you feel the need ... That is the fun part about the 700 .... sooooo many after market products are available for it.
TriggerTech makes a couple of different triggers .... I grew up shooting an air rifle with a two stage trigger .... and that is why I prefer a two stage trigger. And TriggerTech makes an excellent one for the Rem 700 ....
If you liked to tinker with things you knew little about. Or treated your rifles poorly with little maintenance. The Remington 700 is for a gun aficionado not a slob. If you’re the latter I’d suggest a plastic t3.

Why would I need to be carefull ... I have a great gun ... and a great aftermarket trigger!
