After shooting a recent match, I am realizing that I want to get a set of binos. I would use them for spotting and for hunting. What are you guys using for binos? (brand and power). I am torn between 10x and 12x. I would like to be able to use them for spotting 1000m+ shots, but do not want them to be limited to tripod use. Is 10x enough?

Thanks for your input.

Just like rifle scopes, its usually not practical to use one pair of binos for both. For hunting you want small lightweight waterproof rugged 8x or 10x. Unfortunately even 10x can be hard to spot hits on paper over 150yds. I find a cheap spotting scope ideal for this. Its never gonna get wet because I'm not shooting in the rain for target.

I suggest vortex Diamondback HD 10x42, I got some this summer and they are very clear. I use them to see 1000+ yards on my front porch and my dad spots me shooting with them. About as good as you can get for around 400$

Get the best binos you can afford. 7x or 8x can be hand held without needing a rest, so, best choice for hunting. I had a used pair of Swarovski 8.5x42s bought from a bird watcher. Excellent resolution. Swapped it out for a pair of Leica binoculars with laser range-finding capability. An old (1970's) pair of Zeiss 8x30's remains one of my favorites when ranging isn't likely.

For a spotting scope, I picked up a Vortex Razor (80mm objective). That works very well at the range. None of the binoculars can do what the spotter can do.
Buy the best you can afford. Try them outside. Look at something really small - I looked at the screw heads on the siding of a building down the street. You'd be surprised how one set of optics will see that sort of thing, while another one just sees a blur.
