Looking to get into precision rilfe competition...

I am left handed and am looking for advice on a good 308 rilfe that is left side bolt. If there is something other than the 308 that is cost effective and accurate, I would like to hear about it! There are all sorts of different shooting positions that I will have to get into, so, from what I gather, a right hand setup won't work for me.
I am looking for something cost effective, but I want to be able to be very accurate. I realise that you may not necessarily be able to get the "best" on a limited budget, so I am looking for the middle ground.
If you have an opinion please tell me the accuracy that can be acheived with said rifle (given I get my skill high enough to fulfill it's potential!)
I appreciate all feedback!

Thanks

Remington 700 VSF can be had new in .308 LH for a new rifle low buck buildup.

Savage is another option if a lefty .308 is not that important. Consider the cost of a new stock when thinking about Savage though as most factory offerings are junk.

Don't discount .223 either...Some decent quick twist rifles can be had (Savage 12VLP) which can launch 75gr. and up bullets down range-quite a bit cheaper than .308 overall.

It would be somewhat pertinent to know what sort of competition you are thinking of as well.

FWIW, there is a 300M ISSF F-class shoot in Mission on the 13th of April which has not only an "unlimited" F-class but a hunting rifle class as well. This might be worth popping out and observing because it will not only expose you to a great cross section of rifles out there, but also the people that are in similar situations to yours. God knows, shooters love to talk guns!

I am not a leftie, but I shoot with many who are and a good number of them use right handed actions deliberately because it allows their non-dominant hand to work the bolt and feed the rifle while their dominant hand remains welded. They claim it gives them an advantage. Having a stock that is contoured for left/right shooting is different.

I second the .223 suggestion for both availability of good ammo and the fact that it won't kick the crap out of you or your wallet to spend a day shooting 223 over 308. I'm sure you've given it thought though.

Excellent suggestions.
Always a bit of a challenge finding LH actions
You will also need some decent glass to see out to 900m (max distance in F-class).
Practice until you shoot out the barrel and then decide what you want to change or customize.

Look for a Remington VS model in left hand. Usually there is one for sale on the equipment exchange. The HS Precision stock on these models are nice, except that I found I needed to raise the cheek piece so that my eye always centered behing the ocular lens.

"...trying my hand at sniper matches..." 600 yards is medium range for some matches. Some sniper matches are shot out to 1,000 yards using custom rifles chambered in .300 Win Mag. You don't need one of them to play though. Any scoped, heavy barrel, rifle with a good trigger will do nicely. You do need to decide how much money you want to spend though. I'd look into a Rem 700 SPS Varmint in .308. It comes the right way around too.
Like Obtunded says, go to a match, if you can, and look at the rifles being used.
