Hello all

I'm looking to get into the shooting competitions and learn what's available in canada and Washington. I live in the lower mainland. Originally I'm from the interior. I don't consider myself a novice but then again the truth is generally seen and rarely heard

I've been shooting actively and hunting since I was 8 and I'm 33 now.

I heard through a through a acquaintance that there are places to practice the 3 gun and the etc.

Do you have any advice for a newbie as I'm pretty eager to give it a try

Thanks!

I would go and see what runs in the region you are in. No point of picking up something that is not active in your area.

Once you have a few disiplines on your list, go and visit them during matches. Most shooters will be more than willing to show you what they have to offer.

From there see what you think you will enjoy more.

Come out to abby, we're a pretty active group of action shooters there.

We have a weekly steel challenge practice every tues evening at 7:30ish til 10:00.

I run the multi gun out of there. I haven't been too active this year as far as holding practices and matches as my personal schedule has been fairly busy. Keep an eye on the afgc website and or the Maverik's multi gun Facebook page if you have FB for future practice and match dates. Feel free to also contact me if you have any questions.

A lot of us are also IPSC shooters and would be more than willing to help you get into any of the sports.

Depending on what you are interested in, you have quite a few options in the Lower Mainland.

If it is pistol you are interested in:

Speed steel at Thompson Mountain is an easy gateway into action shooting. Shoot steel plates fast as possible, from the holster if qualified or from low ready if not. Participation is fairly casual and a good way of getting into the action pistol sports. Good for pistol, rimfire rifle or pistol caliber carbine.

IPSC pistol has probably the most participants by #'s locally. This is action pistol with movement, shooting on the clock. It can be exciting, has probably the biggest rule book and a formal qualification course before you can participate (Black Badge course - good point is that this is generally accepted by most clubs as a valid holster qualification for whatever pistol competition you might want to participate in).

Tactical Rifle and Tactical shotgun

At Thompson Mountain and Chilliwack, action shooting with movement. Mainly AR-15 carbines show up although you can do with any semi-auto rifle , pistol caliber carbine, has even been done with a lever action. There is now a short qualification/certification course. Shotgun can be done with anything from a cheap $250 pump to a fully tricked out Benelli.

Abbotsford Fish and Game is probably the biggest place for 3-gun:

There are enough people who participate in 2-3 of the above that odds are, if you show up for any of the above you can get good information about the other sporting activities.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Check out dssmatch.com
We shoot out of TMSA ( above Golden Eagle Golf Course) and Chilliwack Fish and Game. There's a match this Sunday at TMSA.
Mostly black rifle but also shotgun and long guns sometimes.

Oos! Andrew beat me to it!
Nice summary btw!
