Looking to get more accuracy with a .22, Bolt-action options?

Buy a CZ 457 with a match chamber. Barrel changes are easier that with a Tikka and the chamber is better. Get used to spending a lot more for ammunition than what works in your blasters. 10/22s need to be built to able to shoot with the CZ.

It sounds like a bit of a double edged sword. I'm looking to get into bolt action target shooting as a cost effective alternative to my .223 and .308 guns, however the cheap .22LR ammo im used to won't cut it.

It sounds like some match .22 comes close to what my bulk 223 costs.

Yes, some of the .22LR I shoot costs as much as my .223 reloads LOL. 'Bulk' 223 is also garbage ammo, Take a look at factory match 223 it's not even close in price. 'You gotta pay to play', and you have to pay even more for precision!

If you want cheap precision, there is a Savage heavy barrel FV on the EE for $300.. Buy that, a 40moa rail, starter scope (DB tactical or Argos btr) and a brick of SK RM or Lapua Center-X and you will be ringing steel at 300m in no time...

Compare match ammo to match ammo and rimfire is still alot cheaper.

Consider mid range practise rimfire to be around 20 cents/bang.... no issue shooting out to 400m but there will be outs and that can be quite a high percentage depending on the lot you get.

Match ammo is pretty much 40 cents per bang (max 50cents per bang) and this, PLUS a barrel to shoot it, lets you compete at the podium level.

What is a typical Sierra, Berger or Lapua bullet alone cost these days? So rimfire is still much cheaper per bang... but either way you are spending $$$

If you want to do alot of short range practise (strongly recommend), I have no issue to run Blazer or the like. Inside 100yds, scale the target to catch ALL the flyers, have at it. PRS rimfire has lot more to do with movement and getting stable in awkward positions then dropping big $$$ on a rifle and hope it solves the problem.

You can't outrun your ammo.... nor your skill set.

I compete with both the 10/22 and bolt and have podiumed against very good competition using both. You really don't need to spend alot of money on the rifle... you will on your ammo.

I have a Tikka T1X in an MDT chassis. It is so much fun to shoot with stabdard velocity and subsonic. Can put em through the same hole at 50 yards. My 6 year old can even hit 12ga hulls at 50yards no prob

If you don't want to go all out on the rifle ($2,500.00), you will shoot better with high end ammo in a $900 to $1200 rifle than you will with lower grade ammo in a much more expensive rifle. No amount you spend on the rifle will make up for weakness in the ammo. In most cases, the ammo will be the weakest link (aside from the shooter). There may be good used rifles that will shoot comparable to those $900 to $1200 new rifles, cost only 2/3's as much, and if you pair that with the right ammo you will have maximum accuracy for your investment.

Dollar a shot centre fire ammo is no where near target grade. It will turn a 1/4 MOA precision rifle into a 1.5 moa rifle.

The guy that scoffed at me paying $15-20 per box of Match rimfire, paid $40 for a box of .223 Match.
He blew through it before I had fired 20 rounds then wished his rifle would group as good as mine.
The old computer acronym GIGO could be applied but I did not pay any attention to his .223.

I've done A LOT of research over the past month, CZ457 and Tikka T1X seem to be the two go-to's.

Based on everything I've read, I'll be picking up the Tikka later this month.

Tikka seems to be less picky with ammo and a bit smoother operation (Heard about some bolt grinding right off the bat from the CZ.

Best of luck! Both beautiful options. Dropping mine into a green KRG Chassis asap.

This is the first serious accuracy testing target I shot with a 57M Custom Classic in 2014 (When I could still shoot well) - A 20X5 @ 50 with a good lot number of Eley Match. That rifle, while very accurate, had a number of function issues and I finished up using it as a donor for a custom build.
I sold that factory barrel to an enthusiast who fitted it to another action with very good results.

If that rifle shoots as well as it is pretty, you really have something.

What type of accuracy do "you" want?

As I found with anything with the word precision/rimfire it can be overwhelming, as there is alot of, you need to do this, or run that, or shoot this ammo or else.

Would it be cheaper to get a good barrel, trigger assembly, and bipod for your 10/22?

Semis can't be built to the tight tolerances a bolt action can so, as has already been stated, no. It's the old making a silk purse out of a sow's ear thing- a semi auto can only get so good- good enough for most people but not for high accuracy shooting at distances.

I got a 1022 Target light, and my Cooey shoot rings around it. I thought upgrading the barrel, but like what you said. Can only get so good. I bet the OP Marlin 795 would out shoot it.

You would need a new stock for the larger diameter barrel. You're looking at 500 or more so to upgrade. When I've seen used CZ varmits as low of 600, savage mkii fv that shoot rings around a 1022 it for 300. I even seen 457 MTR for 800. I just keep my 1022 as it's a light weight plinker, as the accuracy isn't there. I'm in the market for bolt action rifle.

I bought a Ans 54 br off ee for a grand. It shoots netter than any of my other quality 22s. My view is what are your parameters, what is your accuracy needs. There is a difference between steel at 100 for fun and a bench rest target for score.
