looking to get my daughter a hunting rifle but im having a hard time picking a caliber for her .

she shoots lots with me and at the range (nokomis ).223

she has shot the .50 ml

im thinking a light recoil and not the 7-08 (just because they look way to close to my .308)

i am looking at 260 rem 243 win 257 roberts

so i am looking for suggestions and opinions

thanks

7-08 , you get the best of a lot of different things, higher BC bullets which will give you equal if not more juice than a .308 down range, light recoil like a .243, large selection of bullets and components and a caliber that is suitable on gophers to moose!!!

But anything you picked will work. .260 is a good all round cartridge also.

Looks is no way to judge a cartridge, after all,a 260 looks way too close to a 7mm-08,and a 243win looks way too close to a 260.Then again they should all look close, since the 7mm-08,260,and 243 all use the same basic case, with different bullet diameters.

The 7mm-08 is a great choice using light bullets, and Remington even offers Managed Recoil rounds for the 7mm-08,which reduces recoil to very mild levels.I would suggest avoiding an ultra lightweight rifle.

If you reload then I'd say .257 Roberts. You can load 100gr or 115gr Partitions with a couple of different powders in the 35.0 to 37.0gr charge range for excellent performance with very, very mild recoil.

the only reason i say not the 7-08 is i dont wanna confuse the cartridge with my 308 (in the field) but as i reload i could load hers with a totally different bullet .

how is the barrel life on the 7-08 as we do shoot lots ?

i think i should get her to shoot a few calibers be for we choose though.

btw she is 11 her first hunting season is next years season so we do have some time yet

thanks for all the responses guys

I'll throw a vote in for the 243. Very little recoil, which to me is a good way to get your daughter shooting more. The gf used the 243 on deer this year and I used 30-06....no difference in the way either performed.

Decide which rifle is the best match for your daughter, then decide on the cartridge by what is available for that particular rifle. I would say if you are concerned about mixing 7-08 ammo with .308, that will also be the case with .260 rounds. The simple solution is to load each cartridge with a distinctive bullet. If your .308 is loaded with Nosler ABs for example, and her 7-08 was loaded with TSXs, there would be no possibility of confusion.

My daughter uses 25-06 with 90g leads she is comfortable shooting it . I already had the gun! if I was to buy one Iwould get 243 win .

How old is your daughter? I would get a Rem 700 243 Youth model. Short with a 20" barrel, short stock 12" instead of 13"pull and overall compact. When she gets older or taller then one just needs to maybe get a bigger stock for it.

I bought one for myself for coyotes. The ideal rifle for walking and shooting with when dressed to the hilt.

The 243 will do what any girl/woman needs unless they are hunting larger game like elk, moose, grizz, or brown bear.

Let HER DECIDE what she likes and want. I would love to be able to take my daughter to the shop and have her pic what she wants. Unfortunately she is not into killing or target shooting.

What about the .250 savage? Its not available in a lot of rifles but its very light recoiling, fairly flat shooting, and it isn't based on the .308 case. Or .257 Rob or 6.5x55.
