Hey,

I'm in the process of getting my PAL/RPAL and am interested in getting a handgun when I'm done. I'd like to get a semi to start, probably in a 9mmx19. I've been looking at Glock, Sig226 and maybe HK USP. I have medium hands, and unfortunately there aren't many handgunners (at least with semis) at my local club. Any recommendations? I'd like to stick with a semi because I'm hoping to join a police force soon, and I figure a bit of advance practice won't hurt. I also don't mind paying more for it, since I want to start with quality to know what to judge against for future guns. To handle them in Ontario before buying, is Shooters' Choice my best option? Thanks!

medium hands

hey man

I would say go with a glock ....most used by the police and if you want to get really familiar with thier 40 cal ....bit snappy ....but its what's issued.

Now since you are going police and you will get the practice with your issued gun consider a pistol for yourself...a CZ75 in 9mm would fit your med hands nicely very good pistol good price too...9mm ammo is cheaper than 40 as well.

how about a revolver, don't let the auto snobs limit your choices.

Ok I should read post better  I use autos for work (browning Hipower) so I like revolvers for my own pleasure, no searching for brass

I have found that once you try out a few different autos you will find one that fits, also the more different types you try the more familar you will become, and its easier to switch form one to the next. I know a few people who know how to use only 1 model of handgun, anything eles and they become confused so get familiar with as many different types as you can.

rotncore, what guns do the PD use in your city? not sure if you want the same or different. I'd get something else....

I'd recomend taking a look at Beretta, I have mediaum hands and find it to be quite comfortable, if you have small hands Vortec is a better choice.

from SIG, HK and Glock I'g go with SIG p226

Actually, I'm trying to go RCMP, and they use the S&W so I hear. So any of those I listed would be different. I want to get something with similar recoil, and cheap to feed/reload, thus the 9mm. Thanks everyone for your replies!

The RCMP out here uses S&W, a buddy of mines GF is RCMP and she came out to shoot with us one day. Man those 13 (I think its 13) round mags seem to last forever. Due to 9mm round prices they were definately envious of my Mark III Hunter though! The downside is that the RCMP S&W model is prohib. Get a 226 if you really want a 9 you wont regret it!

Thanks again for the replies...how big is the difference in recoil between .45 and 9mm? Is it apples and oranges, or more slight difference? On the one hand, I want something to learn on, so less recoil is better I assume, but I also like the idea of a bigger round. Thoughts?

9mm has a snappy kind of recoil and makes a nice cracking sound. Cheap to feed. .45 pushes back against the hand firmly and makes a delicious boom. It never gets boring. And you can see the hole at 20 yards. Unfortunately, unless you reload it costs a heck of a lot more to feed. I reload and can't imagine not shooting .45, but if I had to buy commercial ammo I wouldn't shoot it NEARLY as much.

go with a glock 17...cant go wrong with it. Lots of parts/mags holsters around etc. Its a great newbie gun, easy to operate for a new shooter.

Hi rotncore
Are you still looking to buy a good handgun? If so I own a Remington Rand .45
Model 1911A1 in very good condition. It was Manufactured in 1945 and it is legally registered. If you are interested in buying, contact me for more details. I live in the Ottawa Area.

Rotncore; try out a Ruger in 9mm. I have a P90 in .45 ACP and couldn't be happier with it. For the price, around $500, you can't go wrong.

+2 on Ruger. The new P345 series 9mm feels similar to the S&W 5946 RCMP model, but is TDA rather than just DA.
Ruger semi-auto pistols are arguably the finest value for money on the market.
