Hello,

I'm looking to get into long distance shooting. I am wondering how much it would cost to get set up with a rifle, scope, scope rings, bi-pod, and anything else I missed like a cheek raise. I was thinking of putting around $1200.00 into it, but if I need to save more, let me know. I am from Manitoba so I don't know how far most ranges are, as the three ranges I've been to have been around 225 yards to 330 yards, so in saying that what would be the best caliber to get?

Thank you in advance for your insight and information,

Hello, welcome....

You need to save more..... I apologize for the bluntness, but it's true. I suppose I should ask what you are looking to get to - 300? 500? 1000? 1760?

Off the top of my head, your lowest cost, yet with good value on the used market, would be:

Rifle with heavy barrel - 800-1000$ - look for a Tikka T3 varmint......
Scope - 800-1000$ - great value in Vortex or Sightron
Rings - 60-100$ - Millett tactical are great value
Bipod - 100$ - Champion Pivot Traverse best value I've seen so far

Then you gotta consider reloading gear - probably 5-800$
Cleaning gear - 100$
Case - 50-100$

As for caliber - again, what's your distance?? Do you ever want to hunt with it?? Lotsa choices from .223 to .338 (and beyond).

Give us your wishes, and we'll gladly help you spend your money!!!

The price goes up if you want a tight shot group at long distance but not always.

Are you happy to shoot 5 inch group at 300 yards? (5 shots). or do you prefer to shoot under 2 inch group at 300 yards? (5 shots).

As for the caliber: the best bang for the buck would be 6BR. Don't worry how small the caliber is but it is very accurate.

Your budget is just fine for precision. For example:

Remington SPS Tactical $780 in .308
Bushnell Elite 3200 10x mildot $250
Burris Zee Rings $<$100
Harris bipod $100

These are new prices. Other than the rifle, I would buy the stuff used for lower prices. I have put together a rifle like this and had excellent results out to 700m. Sure paying more will get you better stuff, but you would be well served with the above setup. With this setup, I was able to shoot about 7.5 inches at 500 meters, and sub MOA up to 300m.

I agree with FrankieT. The Remington SPS may not be an elite rifle, but it'll get you started on the right foot while you learn the fundamentals, wind, your shooting style, and equipment preference. It's what I've started/starting with and it work well out to 400-500m.

The Bushy isn't my favorite scope, but it's the best bargain for sure.
