Took a trip to the camp (WMU 58) yesterday to check things out and saw and heard lots of grouse. Better than last years total of about 5... Vegetation is still real thick, lets hope the leaves start changing and falling fast.

flushed a whole bunch of em while i was walking around our camp a few weeks ago. Can't wait for the season to open.

went to check deer feeders with new pup, was hoping to show him birds I'm intersted in (instead of geese he sees at the park) but no luck, will have to try different time of the day this week

We just got back from Massey area on Thursday after a couple days of fishing and bird hunting. In the 2 full days we were there I seen 5 and got 4 of them.Vegetation is still to thick yet though.Think we would of seen alot more if you could have seen more than 5 ft inside the bush. One of the other guys seen 7 but for some reason never got any(not sure why)

Moved to an acreage in June, backing onto 1,000,000 acres of crown land. (Literally) I have been walking the trails and logging roads behind the house and watching the ditches, and have yet to see a single blue or ruffed grouse. This despite living in an area that's supposed to have the highest concentration of blues in Canada....

Not exactly the best year ever...

Are you sure you are near crown land? All the wild land near Nanoose Bay is private timberlands...

I drove down to Vilna today and spent three hours in a very nice spot. (from 7ish to 10ish) Did not see one flipping grouse all morning. Last year when I was muzzleloader hunting for deer here, I always seen grouse. This spot is empty of them this year. Maybe it's too early in the season, but today conditions were perfect & nothing was seen by me.

strange

Good numbers in our area after an extremely poor last season. My theory is main factor is hatching time, right conditions (no cold blowing rain) then a few weeks after that and once the chicks get to be a certain size you are on your way. There are certainly other factors but to my way of thinking this is the primary one. Looks to be an excellent year.
