I have been having these bugs that look like Tics with wings around me under my jacket when I am outside cleaning Ruffies or Spruce grouse.

I recently trapped one and google photoed it and it turned up Louse.

This is the first year I have ever seen them. They are on majority of birds within 25km radius of MATACHEWAN.

Do these insects pose any threat to the meat?

Anyone know much?
First post,

thanks in advance for any answers!

Never had that happen, but I've never heard of an insect on birds that's dangerous, other than ticks of course, and they don't have wings- but I didn't know lice have them either. For grouse or other small game, I carry a white kitchen style garbage bag into which I've sprayed a bit of permethrin (smells like citronella), and I spray some in the game pocket as well. With that, no bird borne insect has ever bothered me, and once the bird is plucked and you wash your hands, the permethrin is all gone. Permethrin is approved as a residual spray on human clothing and for direct use on animals, I get mine at farm supply stores, usually in the horse section.

Yeah I had 2 grouse with them this year as well. I'm Sudbury area. First for me as well, thing started crawling up my arm, and was tough to knock off. Kind of creepy.

Im 39, been shooting grouse since I was like 9 , Never have I seen these bugs in Matach until this year.. and there is many.

Sounds like Hippoboscid flies. I was a bird bander at Hawk Cliff near Port Stanley for many years and used to get these on me from the hawks frequently. To me they looked like a flat deer fly. They won't hurt you but they do feed on the birds of course. Interestingly, there is awingless variety that live on sheep called a sheep ked. They sure do tickle if get between your skin and your clothing, but usually they get in between your layers of clothing and will just leave on their own.

First time ever seeing them in Timmins area. I thought it was just an isolated incident. Looks like there's more too it. Flat looking deer flies is a great description. They're tough buggers, a buddy of mine swatted at one repeatedly without inflicting any damage. I hope it doesn't hurt the birds.
