I have to say there is no better feeling than shooting my norc with open sights! The m14 shoots bettter than I can do. Very gratifying to hit where you aim. I took two norcs out today to the range. One was on 100 meters 8 clicks up and the other was on in 12. One was shooting left and the other was shooting right .The right shooter is near to center while the left shooter is quite far left on bull. But they're dead on now at 100. What is the come ups in clicks for 2-300meters/yrds and on..So I would like to know the drop with military ball(SA) with a 100 meter zero. Any info would be appreciated Cheers

Really simple to find the comeups. So simple in fact; you will ask yourself, "Now why didn't I do just that?"

No joking... here it is:

* Grab your Norc M14
* Start with your elevation knob at the 100m index line
* Turn knob (rearwards to you) up to 200m, at the same time count the kliks made

* There should be 2 of them (maybe 3, I cannot remember, I should go and look at my Norc)
* Do the same from 200m to 300m (should be 3 of them)
* Do the same for 300m to 400m (should be 4 of them) maybe 3 ...

Can you spot that pattern? That works for the 55 FMJ M193 ball round also (give or take a klik or 2)... Remember that Jean Cantius Garand is a genius beyond all of us. He designed the kliks to be ONE  MOA (1 klik moves the POI 1 inch at 100 yards). What a no-brainer. Even I can remember that one. That my friends, is the magic of the M1/M14 rear sight adjustments.:D

You see, the comeups are all done for you. They are not super exact given different bullet mfg'ers, powder burn rates, ambient temperature, coriolis effect of the earth, your shoe size, etc. BUT they will get you in the black scoring rings on your first sighter. Then you can tweak your sights accordingly.

Iron sights are my bag. Don't ask me about co-witnessing your SIMRAD and day US Optics or Mark4 or NightForce!

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Barney

emmab,

You mentioned that one of your M14 rifles is zeroed for 100yds/m with 8 and the other 12 kliks from absolute bottom? Have I got that one correct?

Okay M14 lovers in CGNutz Wonderland:

Here's how to lower that klik count (learned from my NRA High Power shooting days) to a nice single digit value (like 8 or 9 kliks).

* Go to your range, benchrest, sandbag in your M14, grab your ammo, screwdriver, variety of files/rasps
* Use a bullseye target 100yards/meters from your bench (either center or 6 o'clock hold will work)
* shoot a group to confirm your 100m/yds zero then count the number of kliks to absolute bottom. You happy now?
* If your count to absolute bottom is double digits (like 11 or 12 or 15 or more), grab your file
* Start filing downwards (see the slope of the factory front sight blade?) and towards muzzle of flash suppressor
* Keep the file FLAT, keep the profile of the front sight blade square (from the rear sight, I mean)
* Give it about 5 to 10 strokes, if you brush the side protector wings of the front sight then Birchwood Casey Cold Blue Paste is your friend. Use Q-tips to apply.
* Shoot another group of 3 or 5 rounds
* Observe to see if you need to LOWER your rear sight aperture. AHA! The magic is working. :D Hungry knows WTF he's doing!
* Keep doing this until your klik count is about 8 or 9 kliks from absolute bottom. That's it!
* Final inspection, look through rear sight aperture, ensure edges are square, then COLD Blue the freshly filed metal surfaces.

IF YOU FZck things up and go too low... front sights are not that expensive (I've done this  ). And that's why I'm your advisor/mentor for all this M14 fun... It's because I've fzcked up more times that all of you... well except for Laz2000 and M14doctor... they are catching up to my antics!

And here's the anecdotal funny story (for those of you who have attended my M14 clinic).

I established a low rear sight click count of SIX  for obtaining a super low cheek position for the Stage 1 of the NRA High Power NM course of fire; 200 yard off hand/standing position. I used the Sierra MK 168 gr bullet with 42.5 gr of IMR 4895. Well halfway through the season I ran out of IMR 4895 and switched to our team's load of 43.0 gr W748.

My SIX clicks was too low!  D'oh!! Too low for the 100m zeroing bull target. And yes, I was competing with a Springfield Armory M1A with NM barrel and McMillan fat bastard M1A heavy stock. Apparently I shaved off too much metal from the front sight, my coach laughed at this because he too made that mistake many years ago! Hey, it's all good! :)

I had to buy another front sight and start this process all over again. Cost me $ 10 for the front sight and $ 15 for mailing and tracking number.

Okay, get those files out and 'have at 'er!! :D

Cheers all,

Barney

Thanks Barney, a wealth of info as usual. Yes you understood right. One rifle is different than the other by about four clicks from absolute bottom to a 100 meter bull setting. I guess that doesn't matter now that they ARE zeroed. I'll give your info a whirl next time I get out to the range. I like the Keep It Simple Stupid approach.
Much appreciated and keep up the good work!! Cheers

Did you have to move your front sight at all , on my Norc the front sight and base has a engraved dash vertically across both , however the sight sits on the far right of the front sight dovetail .

It was on at 50 and 100 without the front sight moved but when i read that your front sight is suppose to be right in the center , i moved it and now nothing shows on paper , what the hell is going on lol .

Yeah that's kind of what happened to me. I set the front and use the rear for windage. I guess the problem is the barrel is not indexed correctly(tightened too much or not enough). Take a few shots then move the front sight(drift it after loosening the set screw) the same direction that the bullet is missing( ie bullet hit left, move front sight left) then leave it alone.
