I've had a Baikal IZH-18 in .223 for a couple of years, and not shot it much, due to life with kids. But due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, it's my only rifle I'd consider ready to take deer hunting this year, so I was toting it today.

Must say that for a budget gun, there are a few hinky things (the ugly gap between the barrel and the action hinge when locked up), but overall, it's a dream to carry. Receiver is nicely contoured on the bottom, like an old-school Win 94 but better. Light. There's no checkering on mine, but the forend is perfectly shaped for a decent grip. All in all, a very nice gun to carry through the woods!

Now I need to find one in .243 ...

Great little rifles, I have one in 222 and for a 5 year period it accounted for more animals than all my other guns put together. Bit agricultural, dovetail is a bit short for many scopes, but after a trigger job, mine really shoots!
