I finally got some time to head to the range yesterday to test out some handloads and get a handful of hunting rifles out practice with.

Of the rifles I brought, the one that I enjoyed the most was the Ruger Scout. Mine has a synthetic stock i did a paint job on, turned out pretty good, and the stock iron sights. I do have a bunch of Magpul AICS polymer mags for it and made a noticeable difference in working the bolt more smoothly.

Sure, the weren't the tightest groups I've ever shot, but for iron sights, after not using them in so long, I was more than happy. The trigger is clean with a crisp break, its handy and lightweight, the sights excellent. I had forgotten how much I loved this rifle. A perfect companion in the Northern Ontario wilderness I frequent.

So if anybody else has a Ruger Scout sitting in the safe that you haven't had out in awhile, give it a try, you might be surprised at just how nice, and useful, of a rifle it actually is!

I love my GSR 308 and 5.56 rifles. I shot a mule deer with my 308 last fall, very compact and handy rifle. Shoots reasonably well too

There's mine tucked away onthe3 right hand side of the case. I've been shooting it quite a bit over the summer and hope to get some blood on it this year. :)

Yes I have the XS rail, I really like the ability to mount any optic I want, and still have great iron sights. I swap between the Leupold Vx3i 3.5-10x40 CDS ZL (Leupold QRW rings), Leupold FxII 2.5x28 scout scope (Warne QD rings), and Vortex Venom red dot - depending on what I am doing with the rifles.

Always liked that M70.

How do you like the low power swfa? Has it been as reliable as the higher power models?

It seems as reliable as any other scope. I like it quite a bit although there are a few things I would change on it. I think an ideal LPVO should have a reticle that can operate as a red dot sight on 1x. The SWFA illuminated diamond reticle does that reasonably well but could be much brighter. Overall the diamond dot reticle works great for shooting 0-300 yards as you can either just quickly place the diamond on your target at close range or use more precise aiming points for 100 (top of diamond) 200 (center dot) 300 (bottom of diamond)

I'm going to be adding a 12" barrel 6.5 Grendel to the collection soon and I am investigating more LPVO scopes to use on on it, so if I find the one I want I may replace the SWFA and a couple of other scopes with it as well. The ones that are really appealing are in the $2-3K range but that adds up pretty quick when replacing 2 or 3 scopes. Especially as these are more niche rifles.

But overall, the 1-4 SWFA is a good scope. I like it better than the SWFA 6x which I find to be useless for hunting as the reticle is too fine for my eyes, gets lost in lower light and there is no way I could quickly use the reticle for compensating for distance.

Not to mention the overall size of the 6x as well. I’ve been looking into the NX8 1-8, that looks like a pretty nifty optic. If and when you do decide to replace the swfa let me know, I’d love to try one on my 18” kimber Montana knockabout gun.
