Previously I had posted my 88 in the photo gallery but now thanks to a purchase from a fellow CGN'r & only short of a butt stock shell holder it's finished. Yes I know some of you will say what the f**k is the use of that POS. But my buddies and me have fun playing around with it in the bush. Total investment=$265.00. Fun with it=priceless, especially with 3" slugs and numerous imaginative targets, ie. one of my buddies leaky alum. saddle tanks. :D
I'll apologize to the members that feel a shotgun is for hunting or clay targets only. I have a hunting shotgun as well.

I'm with u....

hey man....I like it...I have a "budget" tactical shotgun as well....A Winchester Defender with an ATI top folding stock,ATI pistol grip fore end and the ATI ghost ring sight heat shield(just like yours)....I know some people here dislike the ATI stuff because it is "cheap" but not all of us have alot of money to spend on our "toys".....and I just use mine for fun as well...shooting anything i can get my hands on....I work in a grocery store so I tell my coworkers to save things that are "shootable" instead of throwing them out....watermellons...pumpkins...anything outdated that is going in the garbage...I shot a case of aerosol whipped cream cans once...Now that was fun those things explode pretty good because they are pressurized(messy clean up though...but was worth it)...old computers,CD players,TVs...In the end its your money so be proud of what u have.....later...Wes

Thanks guys!
The pressurized spray cans are always fun. The last time we were out we perforated an old metal 4 drawer filing cabinet and a commercial (metal) ceiling fan. The fan still sort of worked so we mounted it horizontally to a backstop and plugged it in. Then we took turns trying to only remove the blades as they slowly rotated. Ya, I know thats kind of whacked but entertaining never the less.
Hey I've even got a buddy that will take scrap lumber and build a mock up building just so we can light it on fire. Now thats wacked.

I don't see anything thats whacked there, hell we all get caught up in a moment of pure unadulturated fun and we all know it is hard to reproduce the next time around so sieze the moment.

So like I said, shoot it, and shoot whatever the hell you want with it cause thats just ####in fun.

HA HA! :D

Shooting household appliances is FUN! Puts a nice "real world" perspective on shooting. I used to love going to the dump when I lived up north and shoot fridges, toasters, stoves... great fun!

I did that once - went and shot a bunch of cast-offs from the grocery store; pumpkins, watermelons, et al. I shot a box of Corn-Flakes once from 300 yards offhand, but was later arrested on suspicion of being a cereal killer.:dancingbanana:

Bah. I used my Cheap Tac Shotty at the trap field for fun. Total Investment was a little over $300 (Damned ATI Stock)....

Mossberg_500-002.JPG

Mossberg 500 w/18.5" Smoothbore & synthetic fore stock
ATI Collapsing Stock w/shock pad
Side mount Weaver scope rail (Swapped with the shell carrier regularly)
Cheap but effective 4x Tasco Shotty scope
Mini-Mag light w/ led conversion and rear on/off switch
Simple clip on 12ga Fiber Optic (Used when scope isn't mounted)

I did find that a box of 3" slugs hurt the shoulder at the end of the day....
How nice are those aftermarket heat shields w/ Ghost rings? I've been thinking of getting one but don't know how well they work.

Nice looking tac gun you got there. The scope and fiber optic sites are a nice touch. I wish I could find a relatively low cost laser to mount on mine.

I haven't tried the gun out yet with the ghost ring heat shield on. But when I do I'll let you know.

Yeh the 3" slugs hurt a little at the end of the day, since there isn't much of a recoil pad on the ATI and my 88 is quite light. But it's a heck of a lot easier to tame then when I first got it and it had only a pistol grip.
Not as plain either.

THIS IS WHAT IT FIRST LOOKED LIKE.

I did my Mav 88 up like that as well, with the ATI stock. When I buy my SDASS, I'll just keep the Mav with her pistol grip, so I can strap her to my backpack.

Did some Skeet shooting with her, last weekend (not much, cause it was like -800 with windchill) and surprised me how well she did. Just backyard stuff with a Thrower, but it was still fun.

I'll join in. Here's my tactical 88. It started as a fixed mod choke 28" vent rib model but after a few purchase from the EE....

Goes to show you that you don't have to get a second mortgage to add some mods to a cheaper shottie, and make it the way you like.
Oops! I can hear some people with high end guns cringing and maybe even calling me names.

I've helped out with and attended more than a few "bear defence" courses in north central B.C. The arm of choice by the majority of students was always the pump action shotgun.....lessons I learned over and over.....

1) Remington 870s, Ithaca 37s, Mossberg/mavericks, are all good reliable servicable pump guns.....provided they did NOT have pistol grips alone....they have no place on a defensive shotgun.....folders are not the best but is length is an issue for you thats about your only option....I would stick with a full stock and get a Dlask 12 inch barrel.....
2) The WORST were the winchester 1200 series followed closely by the 1300 series (defender)....I'm not picking on anyone's choice of firearms but I would stay waaaaay clear of winchester pumps if my life was on the line.....

The above is not just hot air.....my opinion is based on coaching dozens of shooters over several years....and please, for Bears, rifle sights and Slugs ONLY....buckshot is for westerns like broke back mount'n:eek:

I agree that the pistol grip alone gives you very little accuracy.
Someone once said that the last shot in the mag coud be 000B since if you missed with the slugs (lets hope your not that bad a shot) you could afford the buckshot since the bear would probably be that much closer if it was charging.
It you still miss at that point, then hope the shotgun is strong enough to be used as a club.

I have heard the same type of rubish...."hit him in face with birdshot so he is blind", "hit him in the hind quarters to break him down first", "load with ssg, then a slug, them ssg....." blah, blah, blah....I KNOW of cases where ssg has failed to stop charging bears....3 rounds within 15m....all center of mass hits....a single pellet of ssg or OO buck is about the same as a 22 long rifle slug.....who would willingly engage a bear by shooting him 8 or 16 or even 24 times with a 22....not I.....lets leave all the "I heard" and "someone told me once" type advice where it belongs and rely on fact, tried and true.....after all it is, or could be peoples lives on the line.....when it comes to safety from big bad bears......despite all the "it won't happen" city boy types.....

155mm howizer loaded with a charge 7 and 90-130 3/4to 7/8 inch lead balls lets see a bear walk away from that

the next best thing to a rilfed barrel is a cylinder bore choke for slugs as it has less recoil

now i'd say a 20 inch barrel solid folding stock mag extender sights and rifled barrel and slugs is reliable for me

my fire arms instructor says a 12 doulbe barrel with 0 buck in the second chamber and a slug in the first hit the nose then blow out it's eyes it has no way of finding you and has take a sever hit he has the years of fire arms knolages to know what he's talking about but i'll stick with a pump witthis load out

armour percing slugs which as far as i can tell are legal and will pover penitrate cauing lots of damage in the chamber

standard slug for the second shot as well as the third 0

buck for the forth

and the rest a niftyl ittle contraption that is for last resort flame thrower rounds to the bears face will cause mass tisue dammage should the other shots not work

thought untested on game flame thrower rounds are not what one would call humain i would never carry them for hunting as they cause mas tramma but to get a bear to back down i think they would be quite effective

and one last shot of your choice if you fail cause if a bear survives that your gonna wanna kake sure it's painless
