Low powered scope recommendation?

I am now again visiting on the subject of acquiring a low powered variable scope. This is going to be perched on an FN K98 Mauser actioned rifle, in .458 X 2 inch American.
My only needs are two, lots of eye relief, and most likely, a varible with a top end magnification of 5 or 6 power.
Can anyone with a similar rifle/calibre recommend a certain brand?

I am thinking along the lines of a Leupold 1.5-5 or 1.75-6 power in the VXIII series. Maybe a Circle Dot Reticle too.

Cheers............

Doesn't come any better than the 1.5-5 Leupold...Look no more. ;)

Just to add, I did a side by side comparison with a Bushnell 4200 1.5-6 x 36 (yes I know it is not quite the same but it's all I have).

The "picture" meaning how easy it was to get a clear view, head positioned, and on target, was better with the Leupold at the low end of the magnification

However the "picture" was better through the 4200 at the high end of the magnification range.

I feel this type of subjective comparison is better suited to these lower powered scopes than a strictly technical evaluation for hunting usage.

Have both, like both. I should say I really like both. You couldn't go wrong either way but the 1.5-5 is slimmer. Oh, I just ordered another 1.5-5. Did I say I really like the 1.5-5?

This Zeiss Diavari-C 1.5-4.5X18 shown on this Merkel is better than a Leupold 1.5-5:nest:

My first "expensive" scope was a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 purchased because of the extensive superlatives I read regarding Leupold's products.

I got rid of that scope after 2 years due to excessive flare from the rear ocular that interfered with the image. Saved some more and bought the Zeiss (like the one shown) and never regretted it.

I still have a Leupold 1.75-6E which is a decent scope cause it is lightweight (despite that fact that the focus adjustment does not accommodate my need for reading glasses now - while the several Zeiss - and other scopes - I have do)

Zeiss, Shmeiss, sure they are good scopes but get the Leupold instead. It is a great scope that can take a beating!
I agree, Zeiss, Shmeiss is not tough enough, lead heavy and overpriced, Leupold will do it in flying colours, but if weight is a consideration and money tight then tough and crystal clear Burris 4X20mm mini for less than $ 200 with 5"+ aye relief and 7,5oz will deliver too. My 2c.

How much are they? Two or three times the cost of a VXIII, maybe. Are they two or three times better?
I have owned and used them both ... 1) The Zeiss I described is better than the Leupold I owned 2) The tube of the Zeiss I described is stronger than the Leupold - as far as over all strength I have no problem with the Zeiss on a 375H&H - although frankly that is not too tough a test in my opinion. 3) Based on the unsatisfactory coating and flare I experienced with the Leupold and the limited focus to accomodate older eyes ... the Zeiss is easily "two or three times better" .. in fact many times that which is why I got rid of the Leupold.
I bought the Zeiss scope because of it's performance. Not the name ... which is unfortunately all too often (I think) the case with Leupold purchasers. I am not a scope snob... I have Leupold scopes .. also B&L and Bushnell ... I currently also own a Bushnell Scopechief IV .. which as it happens is better optically than the Leupold was fwiw.

Buy what you like .. it is good to have competition - keeps the prices in check. I know why I bought the Zeiss we are discussing - I would do it again.
