Hello,

I am looking to find the lowest power ammo for a Ruger 10/22 that will cycle. I have heard rumour one can use subsonic rounds if one lightens the bolt, which makes sense as it is direct blow-back powered.

Ideas or what ammo you use?

Before you buy the ammo, I would try to "lighten the bolt" first. You will find that Ruger 10-22 bolts are extremely hard and will resist most attempts by home gunsmiths to drill them out. Without the use of a milling machine and proper bits you may have some problems. Most sub sonic ammo will not operate the bolt reliably so I would try standard velocity. Good luck. Phil.

My 10/22 (sold it this year) cycled just fine with subsonic ammo or at least, the Federal Gold Medal I fed it. Not pricey at all, and zero issues with feeding even though I did nothing but keep the rifle clean and install a bolt buffer.

I know there is a .22 short kit you can buy (VQ?) if you're into messing with the options but really, I only ever shot subsonic with mine and it worked fine. Model was 10/22 RB, just a standard carbine.

Mine runs without problems on subsonic ammo. I radiused the lower rear corner of the bolt where it cocks the hammer like this:

I don't know if the lower weight makes much difference so much as the improved geometry spreads out the work to #### the hammer over a greater portion of the cycle. I have noticed no ill effects from shooting regular high velocity ammo.

My 16 years old 10/22 not running good. Lots of FTF, FTE with Remingtong Thunderbolt. The gun start having problem after every 200 to 300 rounds, due to fouling. Not realiable at all.
Actually which ammo is best for it?

I have also radiused the rear of the bolt and feed my 10/22 a steady diet of CCI Subsonics with no issues.

I like CCI, both the Subsonic and the Mini-Mag, but others have found Winchester to work well. Remington ammo is filthy stuff i agree.

Remington Thunderbolt = Scheisse. Changing ammo may be all that is required.

Bulk ammo that has worked well for me includes Winchester 333/555, Winchester Dynapoint, and Federal bulk packs.

CCI Target is subsonic works well in both of my 10/22s. CCI CB will not cycle the action. I use it as a first round into the magazine. When whole magazine is fired CCI CB will fire and won't cycle, this way I can avoid empty firing pin strikes

Change ammunition types if you don't like the fouling, and clean the rifle. My 10-22 has never had a FTF, but I do clean it every brick or so (500 rounds). It is not a rifle problem.
