I'm building out my SKS, and want to put a LPVO on it.

Max distance I'll shooting is 300 meters.

Rifle purpose, hunting and range.

I'm not sure if it's worth getting one built around the 7.62 such as the primary arms, vortex or the SAI 6

Also looking at a brand called monstrum tactical, they're super cheap and come with a lifetime warranty.

Looking at other brands such as riton / crimson trace.

I'm not even sure how much to spend.

The more I look into brands and price it seems like everything is roughly the same quality wise until you get up 1/2/3000 Rifle scopes and then it's more of the same, everything is similar in that price range.

I checked out the ACOG and the elcan spectre but the price on those seems super steep for a fixed sight.

Or do I just skip the LPVO and get a 5x prism and a red dot for closer stuff

I have an astigmatism so I don't know how well I'll be able to use a red dot.

Could try a 1x prism and a 3 or 5x magnifier?

Alternatively Discovery Optics do a 1-6 and 1-8 model lpvo for around $270 shipped and taxed. Also has a lifetime warranty..

I already own a vortex 1x & 3x prism

I didn't think it was possible to use a magnifier and a prism?

Yessir - have a lil google on it. Not tried it with a 3x or 5x but I hear it does work with the magnifier sitting forward of the optic.

Calibre specific reticles are nice but still not bang on unless you find a load/range that matches the reticle. Can always figure out your own holdovers on any other reticle to the same level of exactness..

I'll have to check and see.

I know they won't work on my 1x prism red dot.

I had to do that with my 3x red dot, it's set up for 5.56.

I guess for range use you can get away with any optic and adjust your range/shooting style to suit.

If you’re considering hunting, then the terrain, how you hunt and what you’re hunting should likely determine your optic choice and the magnification you may or not need.

In dense brush, dont really want magnifiers, red dots and flip to side mounts hanging of a rail getting snagged. In the same scenario, a high powered scope probably wouldn’t be the most effective choice either.

Lpvos give a lot of versatility, but perhaps not as well as a different scope setup (red dot, prism, traditional scope). However, if it’s a multi task rifle, then maybe it needs a multi task scope - which is what an lpvo is. Although they do tend to come in a little heavy.

What about a regular 2-7 or 1.5 + hunting scope?

My brothers both hunt and it's part of the reason I got my PAL.

Sks was the first firearm I purchased. I figured why buy a secondary rifle for hunting when I already own the SKS.

It's definitely bring used a multitask rifle. I wanted to make it to something like an SPR/DMR rifle.

When I pick up a second SKS and put it together it will strictly be for fun and the role of this one will change.

Haven't looked much into 1.5 or 2x rifle scopes.
Don't know how they would operate at closer distances / sub 50 yards.

I had one of those vortex spitfire prism scopes on a wk181 and it worked really welll
A Burris RT-6 is a really nice 1-6 lpvo scope
