I realize you can't have the best of both worlds (or maybe?) most of the time. What I'm looking for is a rifle for hunting some open stretches for big stuff so 300 or 338 winmag is my 2 choices. I'm left handed so bolts are not as plenty-ful I know. No this will not be used for compitition at all but I do want to be able to make some well placed shots. Where should I be looking as far as factory built rifles go. Thanks

I would choose the 300 because of the superior ballistics and bullet choice. I don't think the added BC of the 338 would be useful because of the decreased velocity, but remember what you paid for my words.

Check out Ellwood Epps used rifle section. They have a LH Montana 1999 in .338 WM set in a MacMillan A5 with a 5-20 (I believe) mounted already. Not a rifle to be hauling through the bush all day, but a real sweet rig IMHO. Don't wait too long,.. I might not be able to resist much longer:evil:

You poor southpaws definetely are challenged when it comes to selection. As far as factory options go...Tikka and Savage seem to cater to you guys. Good luck. :)

The biggest thing about longrange is practice. With enough practice you will learn that a 308 with the right bullet will outperform a 300 mag with the wrong bullet once you pass 350 yards. Bullet selection is critical.

That said I would look into something like a Remington Sendero, but they don't come in left hand. A Cooper rifle like the excaliber could be had with the left hand costing 200 more. To be honest shooting prone with a opposite handed bolt is pretty nice, you just need a lefty stock and a right action, although that does not make a good all around rifle.

I would think if you want a truely accurate rifle, you would be best served finding a donor action (buy a lefty rem sps or a savage, in a magnum caliber) and replace the barrel and get a decent stock. The remington trigger can be tuned nicely, despite what the tv says, and I actually like the accutrigger. Sell off the factory barrel and stock to recoup some of the cash. I did a bit of searching but there is not much in the way of a long range rifle built for a lefty.

Unless you reload, you rapidly reach a point of diminishing return in investing in expensive guns. Assuming you are an accurate and precise shooter, a gun will only shoot the the lesser of the ammo or the rifle.

a 30-06 or a 7 Remington magnum in a Tikka T3 will be plenty accurate enough, flat-shooting enough and with enough ommph.

Using a 338 Winmag on a whitetail doe at 100M will make a mess. At least with a 7mm or a 30-06, you can use it on evrything, you just need to know your drops.

I just finished chambering a Shilen CM match barrel in .338 edge, it is going on a 275$ stevens action. Will make for a cheap semi custom boomer. Check out the .338 edge, lots of info on the web. I have more bbls on order, hopefully one for me :D The last one was gonna be mine but....
