So, in the ongoing saga of deciding what to do with this action it was brought to my attention that the .280 Rem I bought will need to have the bolt face opened up to accept the .300 Win Mag (Thanks .240 Gord). It is not that I didn't know this, just that in the heat of the moment at the auction it was the furthest thing from my mind!!!

Just to clarify though. The only difference between a Rem long action magnum and non-magnum is the bolt face, correct? If this is the case I will have the bolt face opened up and be back on my way.

That is the only difference between the two when they come from the factory, but remember that you will have to install a Sako extractor in the bolt because when the face is opened up the Rem. extractor has to be removed. In my opinion this is all a good thing, not that I ever had a Rem extractor break!!

The rails of the action may also need work... you could try a couple of magnum rounds and see how they come out of the magazine...

If you have the bolt opened up, have an original Remington extractor installed. The "other" extractors in a 700 weaken the 700 design terribly, to the point of being unsafe if you have a catastrophic case failure .... it has been discussed a lot on GunNutz and Benchrest Central.

Yes, I think in light of this info I will have to sell the whole gun and find a magnum. The worst part is that there were three magnums at the sale and I didn't win any of them. Too many people there and some things were just going for crazy money!!!

Why not just shoot the 280Rem?

You can push a 162gr Amax at least 2800fps which is plenty for 1000yd plinking.

You might already have everything you need right now. I shoot a 7 Mystic and having a hoot.

That true, it way better than 308 out to 1000yard, it even better if you leave the barrel atlease 26inchs...
If I were you, get a rem700VSSF, it does come in 7mm RM, I am currently waiting for one from Gun&Wholesales, it a rem700P in 7mm Rm, that would be a great choice for long range....
