I want to build a really good quality M14 for hunting and long range target, but it's going to end up being expensive so it will take a little time to buy everything or get each part ordered and shipped.

My crazy idea is this.
1. buy an LRB M25 Receiver + LRB Bolt Carrier
2. buy a Norinco M305 Shorty
3. Build the M25 with the norinco parts
4. Gradually replace the norinco parts with other quality parts as I progress, kreiger barrel, tacticool stock, USGI trigger, etc.

Am I crazy? I understand that if I don't buy the M305 and just wait I could put that money towards a good barrel, or other parts but lets ignore that logical thinking for now.
I figure the LRB stuff will be pretty accurately to spec and a competent gunsmith should be able to drop it into my M305 and check the headspace for a trival fee(?) Then another trip when I get a new barrel.

I was originally going to get just the M305 and pimp the crap out of it. But all it would be is a dressed up Norinco and still technically just a $400 gun with a bunch of cool stuff on it.

I thought I would sanity check this idea here. I also could just buy a M305 and shoot that while I build my M25, but where is the fun in having those posh $2000 worth of parts laying around.

Why not get the M25 receiver and the shorty M305 and just shoot the Norc while you slowly build the LRB? Possibly save yourself headspace issues with Norc barrel and LRB bolt. My guess is you'd end up with tighter headspace if you atleast wait til you get the LRB receiver barrelled+save yourself some gunsmith fees vs putting the Norc barrel on the LRB receiver...

As long as you have the LRB receiver and bolt and an excellant quality barrel, almost everything else could be norc and changed later as money became available. Go for it!

Once you have an LRB in your hand you won't even consider screwing on a Norinco barrel.

Remember that not all of the parts will interchange, if you get a Krieger barrel, you'll need a GI gas system, not a Norc one. Given the problems in getting GI parts these days, I'm not sure you can save any money building a rifle on an LRB receiver, versus buying an LRB rifle. I might go as far as having an LRB bolt fitted to a Norc along with the usual tweeks and perhaps a trigger, but I'm not sure I'd go further. Beware of building your own gun, you'll save half as much as you think you will, and you'll only be 1/3 as happy with it at the end.

Actually the gas system will fit, but you'll need a standard threaded gas lock, around 50.00 or less. But enefgee is probably right about bringing in a whole rifle, another way to go is just get a barreled action from LRB. It comes with bolt barrel and headspace all figured out.

Yep check out Armtac ... LRB M25 receivers ... MMMMMMMM goodness! :D I find it funny how some say here it's hard to find USGI parts ... I find them all the time ... you just need to keep searching on here and other gun sites. I'm got almost enough USGI and other manufacturer parts to build 3 M14's ... now Armtac has LRB receivers I may have my builds completed by summer. :D

Yes your crazy, and im going to get stick for this but SAVE your money and buy a shorty and shoot it, you can spend stupid amounts of money on this and it will probably not shoot any better than the norc you buy.

I had spent stupid amounts of money on mine, its now gone :( but it didnt shoot any better with all the money i spent, the rifle isnt usually the problem its the person using it.

ARMTAC is your friend P1RATE ... ;) ... there are all kinds of USGI parts ... just post a WTB ad in the EE and keep reposting it every 7 days or whatever it is and people will pm you with parts ... ;)

This is a very true statment...however they can shoot a lot better if the trigger is done by M14Doctor.....or just buy a loaded Springfield or M21. Unless you enjoy the tinkering........its fun to build up M14's

hehe thanks for all the great advice.
I know for a normal shooter a Norinco shorty is just fine, but I plan on being a great shooter :).

I'll speak with Armtac and see if on his next order I can get a barrel as well.
