I'm new to long range/precision shooting. Previously handgun/rim fire/skeet shooting only. I just bought a Ruger precision rifle 308 and now I am optic shopping. I think I want a sightron, unless someone wants to talk me out of that? I'm not even sure what type of shooting or what distance I will be shooting yet, but target shooting at a range. Anyway, I'm looking at a SIII 8-32x56 LRMOA. Probably my first choice around $1300. I also found a used 8-32x56 LRTD for $800. It is $500 less than the new LRMOA. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the reticle? Is the LRMOA worth $500 more, all things being equal, assuming the used one is in good shape, etc? Or is the LRMOA way over my head as far as what I need to get started? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

If you like a dot reticle, go for it. It is a personal preference. I have a 6-24 with LRMOA, and quite like it. But I also have scopes with a dot, and like them too. What I'm not big on are mildots.

Hey Straker,

Congrats on your Ruger Precision. We have gotten great feedback on it so far and I think you'll be very happy with your purchase. There are a lot of scopes that would work well for your application and there are a number of things to consider when choosing the best scope for your needs. You'll want to think about what range you will realistically be shooting out to (ie: do you live in an area that will allow you to shoot to 1000?), as well as the features that would be useful to you for target or long range shooting (ie: do you prefer adjusting or holding for elevation/wind, therefore, do you want ballistic turrets or a compensating reticle? Or both?). If you would like to chat more on the subject, this is one of my favorite topics to talk about, so please feel free to give me a call at 1-877-547-6873 and I will be happy to help you find the scope that will work best for you.

There are a few differences... the LRMOA scope will have 1/4 min clicks and the turrets are exposed tactical style.

The TD will have 1/8min and covered target style.

I much prefer the LRMOA for my LR shooting and competition useage. I find the multiple aiming points very helpful.

There are some shooters who like the simplicity of the target dot so it is not a right or wrong thing... definitely personal choice.

you will be very happy with the Sightron scope regardless of the reticle.

Enjoy the rifle and let me know if I can help with the optic.

Thanks for the insight guys. I guess if I get a good used one and don't like it I can always sell it. Wildlife federation is just building a new range in Saskatoon, not sure the distances that will be available. Old range is only 200 yards. Also lots of crown and farm land I frequent! No shortage of space on the prairie! Thanks again.
