I shot this yesterday afternoon/evening

Savage LRPV RBLP .223 1:9 Twist
Winchester weight sorted cases
CCI 450 Mag Primers
Varget Powder (25, 25.2, 25.4, 25.7 and 26grns)
69grn Sierra MatchKings loaded just off the lands
Shot Prone off Rempel Ski Pod and Protektor rear bag

I was doing some load tests at 200m with 5 different loads. I shot 2 groups of each load. This was my best group of the day.

Average of the 10-5 shot groups was 1.45". This group can easily be completely covered with an RCBS shell holder :D

I don't expect I will be able to do this again but it was nice to get nonetheless.

Measured Distance is .530, but if I take the E-E distance - .224 I get .501
I will say that the .530 measured group is correct.

Good shooting, and I am thinking that you have a chance to duplicate it.However,I do know how you feel,as I have never duplicated the .080" three shot group below, made at 100 yards with one of my 300ultramags and my hunting load.

OAL = 1.970 Measured with Stoney Point Comparator

nice shooting. pardon my ignorance, but why don't you think you can do it again? i'm sure if you do it once, i could probably equal it or at least come close to it again.

I took the the same load out today along with 9 other seating depths and shot them at 100m. The load that shot the 200M group did not shoot that tight at 100. :(

Weather was very favorable for load tests yesterday where today was blustery with switching mirage and not a good day for load tests, it was a good day for learning how to dope the wind though. :D

Nice group Richard,

I had the wife's Mini-14 out today and it is good for about a 6" group at 100 yards. My M-305 did 2.75" with Portuguese surplus!

I am sure your (oal) is 2.970" very good group though, you might want to try some RL 15 24.5 to 26gr it might tighten group a little , it worked in my gun better than Varget and 540vt works well also. These groups are not lucky your gun is capable of these kinds of groups in calm winds and even at 300 yards, shot a groupe with friends Savage with a 1/7 twist with 80gr Sierra's and 25gr og Varget ..839" he is usually around the 1.75" to 2 consistantly at 300 yards, in decent conditions, best I have done with a Rem xcr 26" 1/9 and 69gr Sierra's is 1+" but I am starting to having some success with VT 540 and 75gr Bergers VLD have not had a good day to try at 300y

Here's pics of the seating depth and a bullet beside in comparison. You can see that the start of the BT is just above the start of the shoulder. Due to using a different lot of bullets (explained below) my actual "to the lands" measurement should be 1.980-1.985 which would seat it out another .010-.015 from where it is sitting in the case.

Tip to Base is a 2.370 measurement

I just measured the bullets I used today versus the bullets I used yesterday and there is a .010 difference in the ogive measurement. I had a group that 4 of the shots measured .480 E-E (.259 C-C)....the one I pulled put it to .740 .

I had done different seating depths today and went from (what I thought at the time) .025 into the lands to .025 from the lands in .005 increments. It seems though that I actually had .015 into the lands back to .035 from the lands due to not measuring the new lot of bullets :(

The group that shone at 100m today was the load seated just to the lands, which is where the 200m group was seated yesterday. If I would have checked the new lot before I loaded I would have probably caught it and made the necessary adjustments to the die.

Great shooting. I see no reason why you can't duplicate your results once the load is retuned. Accurate loads are repeatable.

The 25.4gr groups looks nice and round with little stringing. I bet once you get your OAL/new lot sorted out, it will make you smile. Conditions are a real pain as you know and it doesn't take much to push you out a 1/4" at 200m.

If things continue to have flyers, consider a switch to another bullet like the Amax (75gr) or Berger. Might just be what you need to keep all those bullets snuggled up.

I think 1/2 min is a real possibility with these rifles.

Why are there powder burns on the paper? Just kidding nice shootin...not lucky though. The more variables you can control the least luck has to do with it.

I thought I had those all covered with Whiteout!! :D

I was out again today but the conditions were just not favorable at all for what I wanted to do.

Fast switching mirage and no wind flags made for tough shooting. The mirage switch was moving me well over 1moa @ 200m. I will load up more and test in the evening after dinner another day when the winds and mirage usually calm to non existent.

I suggest you try the Hornady 75 gr HPBT match bulets and the Sierra 80 gr. The Sierra needs two scoops of powder to get the velocity high enough to stabalise. Most Savages I have tested will stabalize the 80, some won't.

I suggest trying RL15 (24 to 26 gr). I have shot the 80 back to 1000 yards. You can shoot real good groups at 200 and 300 withthese bullets. I seat them about 10 thou off the rifling.

Thanks,

I am playing with the 75grn A-Max bullets right now. I have yet to do any serious testing with them though.

I will look into the 80grn Sierra's as well.
