I flushed one out of the bush and I had the usual lead on him as he flew. I kept the bead just ahead of him and when I thought the shot was perfect, I shot. But the lucky little feather duster flew behind an old burnt stump and I hit the stump right where he would have been. I only had one round in the o/u and didn't have time to reload before he got out of range. Everyday outdoors is a new adventure.....:D

Lucky you got that far, I marched all day over several places out near Lake Cowichan, and Caycuse last Sunday, and didn't find any grouse, and some of the old hotspots are moonscape clear cuts now. :(

That bird had 2 lives .....

I got one the other day that flew behind a trio of trees as I shot .... and through some miracle/luck down he went, fluttered about and then died. I put him in my game bag ..... but he apparently just fainted or something cause about an hour later didn't the little bugger come back to full life - flapping and fluttlering and trying to get some "air" .... scared the crap out of me. I had to stick my hand in and do it in ....... again.

I always nock their head against a tree before putting it in the game bag. Scared the living $hit out of the first time it happened too.

I thought I was going to get the horse laugh from my fellow cgn'ers for shooting bark.....:D
I was laughing so hard at myself that I probably scared off any deer that were in the same neck of the woods as me.:runaway:

Hi Calum,

I am new to the Island and I am keen to get set up for some Grouse hunting fall 2008. How is lake Cowichan for hunting areas? I have never hunted before I am trying to get my head wrapped around how to go about finding appropriate areas to hunt, do I need to find private land or is there enough crown land. Do you have any pointers for me? I'm, of course, not asking you to divulge you honey holes.. ;-)

Thanks,
Kyle

Same thing happened to me with a spruce grouse (we call 'em spruce partridges) I shot on a hunt with my father. We were headed home in our Ford Explorer and I heard a flutter in the back. I looked in my rear view mirror to see the damned partridge jumping and flapping around. Well, I pulled over got in the back seat and rung his neck...there was a mess of partridge sh@t in the back that yours truly had to clean up. Well, at least we weren't in a pickup, he would have fled away for sure! :D
